Danielle Collins v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head

This will be the first time that Collins will be facing the 123rd-ranked Belgian, Bonaventure.

Collins Turned Things Around at the French Open

Having risen from being 162nd in the world to 36th on the WTA rankings in 2018 thanks to a semifinal at the Miami Open and following that up with another last-four entry at the Australian Open in 2019, Collins looked to have hit bit of a rut with her results in the latter half of that season and the start of 2020.

There were quarterfinal and semifinal appearances at the Brisbane and Adelaide International competitions but a second round loss at last year’s first major in Melbourne saw her drop a lot of points and hence a few ranks as well.

That was the last tournament she had played before the pandemic struck and post her return, a first round loss at both, the Cincinnati Open and US Open saw her staring at one of the worst seasons in recent memory.

At the French Open, however, Collins looked to have turned the corner. On a surface Collins has shown no great affinity for in the past, the American defeated Garbine Muguruza and Ons Jabeur to make it to the quarterfinal before losing to Sofia Kenin.

Can she continue with that run in the new year here?

Bonaventure Looking to Make Top 100 Debut

Having never seen the inside of the top 100 in the rankings, Bonaventure is coming off a third round exit at the qualifying at the Australian Open, allowing her a chance to make this trip to Australia.

If the Belgian 26-year-old can carve out a few wins in this tournament and repeat that similar dose at the Australian Open as well, she could well inch her way into the top 100 for the first time.

That said, Bonaventure will need to turn things around form-wise to have that chance. Her only performance of note last season, for instance, came at the ITF circuit, where in one of the tournaments she won the title – her first since 2017. In only one of the rest of the WTA competitions did Bonaventure win a main draw match – it came at the US Open – underlining the rather underwhelming season she is coming off here.

Collins v Bonaventure Prediction and Tip

It looks like a tall order for Bonaventure to test her American opponent given her form issues last season. Her only advantage is she has played three matches already this year as compared to Collins who will be opening her account this season with this match. Can rustiness cause the American a few issues?

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
