Sumit Nagal v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 72nd-ranked Berankis and Nagal who is ranked 138th in the world.

Nagal Struggled to Follow up on a Solid 2019

After becoming bit of a household name back home in 2019 because of some excellent performances which propelled him to his career-best ranking of 122nd in the world, Nagal struggled through most part of 2020. The pandemic might have had something to do with it because the Indian looked to have made a steady start to the year before the tennis world came to a grinding halt in March.

Since his return to the circuit in August 2020, Nagal’s only performance of note came at the Prague Challenger where he made the quarterfinal. In fact in that last-eight encounter, he took a set off Stan Wawrinka, much like he had done to his countryman Roger Federer the previous season but then proceeded to win just one game after that.

A second round appearance at the US Open was followed by just one main draw win spread across six tournaments and when he went out in the opening round of the Hamburg Challenger, Nagal called off his season.

Nagal will now hope to get going in the new year with a couple of solid performances in the lead-up to the Australian Open.

Berankis Didn’t Play too Much after the Break

The 72nd-ranked Lithuanian featured in only three tournaments after the pandemic-related break ended and tennis resumed in 2020.

At the Cincinnati Masters played in New York, he won a couple of qualifiers to make the main draw where he made the second round before going down to Novak Djokovic.

This was followed by a third round appearance at the US Open, his best ever performance at Flushing Meadows and only the third time ever he had made it that far at a Grand Slam. And then he won his opener at the French Open before bowing out to Djokovic yet again.

Interestingly, his best performance of the previous season came in India where he was a losing semifinalist at the Pune Open. He will now look to kick-start his new season with a win over an Indian.

Nagal v Berankis Prediction and Tip

Berankis has a solid record on hard court surfaces and has the experience to go with it. While Nagal can be expected to show some fight, Berankis will be a heavy favourite for this one.

Tip: Berankis to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
