Novak Djokovic v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

Djokovic has beaten Shapovalov in each of their previous five matches including last year’s quarterfinal encounter at the ATP Cup. The Serb won that pulsating match in a third set-tiebreaker to confirm his country’s progress.

Djokovic Leads Serbia Again

Novak Djokovic, Serbia’s most prominent athlete, will once again carry the weight of a nation in the second edition of the ATP Cup. It is common theory that Team Serbia’s path towards a second straight title will be spearheaded by Djokovic after playing a starring role at last year’s event.

The world no.1 won all six of his singles matches, and two in doubles, including the blockbuster meeting in the final against Rafael Nadal of Spain. This year, Serbia and Djokovic will face a much tougher opposition as early as Day 1, having been paired in the same group as Germany and Canada.

However, Djokovic is widely expected to extend his unblemished record at the event when he opens up against Denis Shapovalov in a repeat of last year’s thrilling quarterfinal which the 33-year-old Belgrade native won in a third set tiebreaker.

Djokovic seems to have warmed up nicely for Tuesday’s rematch against the Canadian power hitter, after playing an exhibition in Adelaide against Jannik Sinner. Initially, the 33-year-old made a surprise withdrawal due to blisters in his right hand and was replaced by fellow countryman Filip Krajinovic who won the first set 6-3 against Sinner.

The eight-time Australian Open champion reappeared for the second set, much to excitement of the Adelaide fans, and completed the win by winning the second set against the Italian teenager.

Shapovalov Joins Forces With Raonic

Canada’s presence at this year’s ATP Cup is one with a potential to wreak havoc and land the telling blow. They boast the swagger of high-flying Denis Shapovalov and the experience of Milos Raonic in singles competition.

Shapovalov has been entrusted as the man best placed to throw the punches at Djokovic in this singles rubber, and judging by what we saw at last year’s match, this has the makings of a classic.

The 21-year-old lefty scored two memorable wins at last year’s edition of the ATP Cup as Canada advanced past the group stages. He beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev to steer his country to the last eight.

His loss to Djokovic in the quarters served as a springboard for a successful 2020 season. He made the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open, and also made the semifinals in Rome and St. Petersburg. He did however end his 2020 season on a three-match losing streak.

Djokovic v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

The severity of Djokovic’s blisters were evident with his absence in the first set against Sinner and a close up view of his hand when he was able to finally get on court. Surprisingly, he did not experience any discomfort and did not lack any zeal in his game. If Djokovic is able to operate at his maximum level, he should win. Shapovalov though, has the ability of turning these kind of matches into slugfests as we saw last year.

Tip: Djokovic to win first set AND match: 1/3 (bet365)
