Having had a terribly underwhelming previous season, Paquet would be thankful for showing some sort of form in the Australian Open qualifiers which were held earlier this month. She won her first two rounds there despite going into those matches as second favourite before registering her third successive straight-set victory to make it to the main draw of the year’s first Grand Slam.
For a player who has never made it to any of the Grand Slam main draws except for her home one – the French Open – this should give her a lot of confidence.
Especially if you compare this with how things panned out in 2020. Since returning back to the sport after the pandemic-induced break, Paquet featured in seven tournaments spread across the WTA and ITF circuit, and won nothing. Not a single match.
Add five first round losses in the first quarter of the season and you are looking at big troubles. She would now be hoping the Australian Open qualifiers would have turned her fortunes around drastically enough for her to win finally win a main draw encounter.

Destanee Coming off UTR Pro Circuit
With most Australian tennis players cut off from the rest of the world during the pandemic, Destanee used her time to hone her skills at the UTR Pro Tennis Series in 2020. She featured in 19 matches between June and December and came away with 16 wins in those.
Previously, before the pandemic had hit, Destanee was a part of the ITF circuit, having made two successive finals – at Launceston and Perth – and a semifinal at Perth again.
This was after she had lost in the final round of qualifiers for the Australian Open, having made it to the main draw in each of the three previous years. What Destanee will now want is for her to emulate her showing from her maiden WTA appearance way back in 2017 when she went on to make it to the second round at the Brisbane International.

Interestingly, Destanee starts off a favourite here with odds of 8/13 for her victory but Paquet’s recent form at the Australian Open qualifiers should count for something. We are looking at a games handicap market here.
