Three-time Grand Slam semifinalist Richard Gasquet will kick off his 2021 season on Monday in Melbourne.
A winner of 15 ATP singles titles, the 34-year-old Frenchman won his last title in ‘S-Hertogenbosch in 2018. The following year he reached the semifinals of the same tournament, while also reaching the last four of the Cincinnati Masters. He ended 2019 season with a 17-17 record and followed it up with a 10-10 2020 season.
A semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2007 and 2015 and at the U.S. Open in 2013, Gasquet reached the quarterfinals at Montpellier and Dubai before the lockdown last year. Once tennis resumed, he made early exits from five tournaments before finally finishing the year strongly in Sofia, where he beat Roberto Carballes Baena, Jonas Forejtek and Salvatore Caruso in straight sets to reach the semifinals. His run was finally ended by Canada’s Vasil Poposil, who won in their contest in three.
Gasquet, who achieved a career-high ranking of No. 7 in 2007, has won eight of his singles titles on hard courts and will be looking to make a promising start in Melbourne.

McDonald Aiming To Climb Back the Rankings
American Mackenzie McDonald didn’t have a great start to 2021 as he was knocked out in the first round of the Delray Beach Open by No. 6 seed Sam Querrey. McDonald, however, reached the semifinals of the doubles event with compatriot Tommy Paul, so he comes to Melbourne with some amount of court time behind him.
Currently ranked 194 in the world, McDonald broke into the top 100 in 2018 and reached as high as No. 57 a year later, before a surgery saw him go down the ranking again.
Known for his speed and aggressive approach, McDonald’s biggest win came in Delray Beach in 2019, when he beat Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinal to reach his first ATP level semifinal.
The 25-year-old American right-hander has two Challenger and two Futures titles. He was 3-5 at the Tour level in 2020, which included a run to the quarterfinals in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.
