Alexandrova Will Hope To Start on a Bright Note

World No. 33 Ekaterina Alexandrova will begin her Melbourne campaign on Monday, as she faces Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the Round of 32 of the Gippsland Trophy, after being given a bye in the first round.

The 26-year-old Russian, who won her maiden WTA title at Shenzhen Open last year, is 2-1 in 2021 having already played at Abu Dhabi earlier in January.

Alexandrova started off her Abu Dhabi campaign well, dispatching Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas in straight sets and then battling past Britain’s Heather Watson in a demanding three-setter. In the Round of 16, though, she was edged out by the second seed Elina Svitolina after another tough three-set affair, which ended with the Ukrainian winning 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (8-10).

Alexandrova, who reached a career-high ranking of 25 last year, had started 2020 with a win in Shenzhen, where she defeated Garbine Muguruza in the semis and Elena Rybakina in the final. Last year, she also reached the semifinals in St. Petersburg and Linz, falling to Kiki Bertens and Elise Mertens respectively.

A finalist in Linz three years ago, Alexandrova will be hoping to start well in the build up to the Australian Open, where she made a maiden Round of 32 appearance last year.

Schmiedlova Advances With Ease

Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova breezed past Russian Varelia Svinykh in the first round of the tournament on Sunday.

Ranked 135th in the world, Schmiedlova needed just an hour and 15 minutes to wrap up the contest 6-1, 6-3.

A winner of three WTA titles, Schmiedlova is in Melbourne as a lucky loser for the Australian Open. She defeated Usue Maitane Arconada in the first round of Australian Open qualifier and followed that up with a two set win over Japan’s Chihiro Muramatsu. She went down to Timea Babos in the final round of qualifiers.

Against Svinykh on Sunday, Schmiedlova saved 4 of 6 break points, while converting 6 of 9. She won a total of 63 points compared to the Russian’s 43.

Schmiedlova is coming off a decent 2020, when she reached the Round of 32 of the French Open by beating Venus Williams and Victoria Aazarenka, before falling to Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska.

Alexandrova v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

While Schmiedlova will give a tough fight, expect Alexandrova to still win in straight sets.
