Garbine Muguruza v Alison van Uytvanck Head to Head

At the WTA level, these players have faced off three times and it’s 2-1 on head to head for Muguruza.

The 2017 Wimbledon champion Muguruza was sent packing by van Uytvanck in the second round of the 2018 edition before she levelled the head to head with a win at Wuhan that very year.

A few years before that, they had also faced off in a Florianopolis Open encounter which Muguruza had won in three sets.

Muguruza Sent Packing by Sakkari in Abu Dhabi

2020 was a comeback year of sorts for Muguruza, and that in itself is a surprising thing to say about a season which was hit so hard by the pandemic. However, Muguruza who looked to have lost her sharpness over 2018 and 2019, came back strongly in 2020 and while she won no trophies there was enough in it to suggest she had found some of her lost mojo back.

A semifinalist at the Shenzhen Open early in 2020, Muguruza then went on to surprise everyone by making it to the final at the Australian Open. A third Grand Slam title was thwarted by Sofia Kenin who came back from being a set down but there was enough in the performances to prove she still belonged to the upper echelons of women’s singles tennis.

After returning from the pandemic break, Muguruza didn’t last too long at the US Open but went on to make it to the semifinal in Rome where she fell to an absolutely rampaging Simona Halep. A third round exit at the French Open ended her season early but with confidence she could up her game and sneak through to another major win.

Straight-set wins in the first two rounds at the Abu Dhabi Open set her up against Sakkari in the third, and while she was a minor favourite, Muguruza fell to a 7-5, 6-4 defeat. Can she better that performance here?

Crushing Win for van Uytvanck in Opener

Playing Su-wei Hsieh in her opening round match, van Uytvanck needed 58 minutes to get past her and set up this encounter against Muguruza. There was barely any let-up from the Belgian world number 65 who smashed past her opponent, breaking her twice in the first three games and then racing past her with three breaks of serve in the second set to complete a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

That win should help van Uytvanck brush off some of the question-marks following an underwhelming season in which she won just seven of her 18 main draw matches.

In fact, since tennis returned following the pandemic-induced break, van Uytvanck made it to the second round of tournaments only twice of six competitions she played.

Muguruza will prove to be a way tougher opponent than Hsieh but the Belgian has proved in the past she can get past the Spaniard. Could become an interesting one.

Muguruza v van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip

We are tipping Muguruza to win this but it might not be as straightforward as it seems. Van Uytvanck will look to push this into a third set, something that sounds like a distinct possibility.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
