Gauff Digs Deep to Eke out Opening Win

It was one of the most thrilling matches of this tournament already and Gauff needed to dig into her reserves of grit and stamina to see off Jil Teichmann in her opening round encounter.

In a match lasting a quarter short of three hours, Gauff edged out her Swiss opponent 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 to set up this second round meeting with her British opponent.

Things went on serve for most part of the first set before Gauff got a decisive break in the eighth game, following which she served out the set. An early break in the second set put the American in pole position but Teichmann broke back in the eighth game, pushing the set into a tie-breaker.

Gauff was always behind the eight-ball in the tie-breaker when she lost a mini-break early, but still fought to save two set-points before losing it off the third.

There were four exchanges of service breaks in the third set and it headed into another tie-breaker as a result, where it was anybody’s game when the scoreline read 5-5. Gauff retained her serve to get her first match-point and then broke Teichmann again to clinch the rousing encounter in three.

Boulter Bulldozes Kalinskaya

Bookmakers gave Boulter very little chance against a player ranked more than 260 places ahead of her but the Brit showed what she is capable of with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Anna Kalinskaya in their first round match in Melbourne.

The big advantage Boulter did have coming into this encounter was the amount of tennis she had played during the pandemic break as well, courtesy the Battle of the Brits and the Progress Tour competitions, winning seven of the nine matches she played there.

Later in the year, she was a finalist at an ITF competition as well, which meant there was a distinct lack of rustiness at her end. And she took advantage of a struggling Kalinskaya, converting four of her five break-points and conceding no breaks of serves in return.

Gauff will prove to be a far greater challenge than that though.

Gauff v Boulter Prediction and Tip

While both players are coming off contrasting wins, Gauff taking more time and expending more energy than she would have liked, she is also the favourite here. If she can start off well, Gauff will a good punt for a straight-set win.

Tip: Gauff to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
