Irina-Camelia Begu v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Sinner Head to Head

The World No. 79 Begu leads 1-0 head to head, having beaten the 90th-ranked Sasnovich in the final of the Korean Open in 2015. It was a fairly comfortable victory for the Romanian, as she won 6-3, 6-1.

Begu Battles Past Zheng

Four-time winner on the Tour, Irina-Camelia Begu rallied from a set down to upset 11th-seed Saisai Zheng of China in the first round of the competition on Sunday, winning the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 45 minutes.

In an intriguing up and down battle, Begu saved 12 of 15 break points and converted 4 of 10 to see off the World No. 42.

A former World No. 22, Begu has nine doubles titles to go with her four singles titles on the Tour. The 30-year-old right-hander won a WTA $125k competition at Indian Wells last year without dropping a set.

She also won an ITF title in Egypt last year, defeating Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the final.

Among the majors in 2020, Begu lost her first round matches at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open, but entered the second round at Roland Garros with a three-set win over Jil Teichman of Switzerland in the opener. She was, however, beaten in the round of 64 by Simona Halep.

As far as other tournaments go, Begu’s best performance in 2020 came in Prague, when she beat Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in the first round, Switzerland’s Leonie Kung in the next and Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in the quarters to reach the last four, before being beaten by Halep in straight sets.

Sasnovich Fights Back To Down Tsurenko

Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich fought back from a set down to defeat Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a first round match that lasted two hours and seven minutes.

Both players won 89 points each in the match but it was the 26-year-old Belarusian who came out on top, having saved 2 of 10 break points and converted 8 of 13.

Yet to win a WTA title, Sasnovic came into the tournament with a 1-1 record in 2021. She won her first match in Abu Dhabi against Hungary’s Anna Bondar but was comfortably beaten by Garbine Muguruza in the next.

A two-time finalist on the Tour, Sasnovich is coming off a decent 2020, having reached the quarterfinals in Palermo, Istanbul and Linz. She also reached the third round of the U.S. Open after beating American Francesca de Lorenzo and Czech Republic’s Marketa Vandruosova in the first and second rounds respectively, but fell to Yulia Putintseva in the Round of 32.

Begu v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

This should be a close contest between two players who had to dig deep to battle past their first-round opponents. Expect Sasnovich to have a slight edge though as she has produced better results over the last one year.

Tip: Sasnovich to win: 8/11 (bet365)
