Tennys Sandgren v John-Patrick Smith Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between Sandgren and Smith at tour-level. However, the pair have pitted wits at Futures and Challenger level where they are currently tied at two wins apiece. The Australian won their last match at the 2017 Knoxville Challenger in straight sets.

Sandgren Out Of Quarantine And Raring To Go

There was bedlam as far as Tennys Sandgren’s participation at the first Grand Slam is concerned. The American had initially tested positive for coronavirus in November, and his latest test before boarding the Melbourne-bound flight was also another positive.

However, Tennis Australia intervened as he was considered not to be infectious and he was given an exemption to fly to Melbourne where he was placed under hard quarantine.

Sandgren has been extremely vocal on social media regarding the tough lockdown measures imposed by the Victoria government. After completing 14-days of confinement in his room, he had only three days of full training before his opening match at the Great Ocean Road Open.

The 29-year-old has saved his best tennis for the Australian Open in recent seasons, reach the last eight in each of the previous two editions. Last year he squandered an astonishing seven match points in defeat to Roger Federer.

Smith Looking To Impress On Home Soil

John-Patrick Smith won’t be playing at this year’s Australian Open after falling at the last hurdle. Having beaten Paolo Lorenzi and Tallon Griekspoor, the 32-year-old fell to the mercurial Bernard Tomic in the final round of qualifying.

Smith has had to do it the hard way as far as qualification to main draw of his home slam is concerned. He has now fallen in the qualifying draw eight times, and on one occasion he had to win the Australian Open wildcard play-off to earn his spot.

During the past six months, the Queensland native played consistently on the UTR Pro Tennis Series in his country as lockdown measures were instilled all over Australia.

Historically, Smith the world no.318 hasn’t set the world alight on home soil, but a meeting against a lackluster Sandgren could be just the opportunity he needs.

Sandgren v Smith Prediction and Tip

Sandgren has been vociferous on Twitter regarding the tough quarantine measures. If he loses focus against a determined opponent looking to make an imprint at home, he could be staring at an early exit.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
