Angelique Kerber v Katerina Siniakova Head to Head

Kerber leads 3-1, but it was Siniakova who won their most recent battle at the Italian Open last year.

Kerber could manage to win just four games in the entire match as Siniakova took the first round contest 6-3, 6-1. Previously, Kerber had won in Birmingham (2015), Beijing (2016) and Madrid (2017), with only the last match going into three sets.

Kerber Lacks Match Practice

Back on court following a difficult period of quarantine in Melbourne, Angelique Kerber is all set to play her first match of the season on Wednesday.

Seeded eighth in the tournament, the German left-hander had to self-isolate herself for a couple of weeks in Melbourne after a person on her flight from Abu Dhabi tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

A former World No. 1, currently ranked 25th in the world, Kerber had a poor 2020 season by her standards as she failed to reach even a single quarterfinal and finished with a 7-6 win-loss record. Her best results came at the Australian and the U.S. Opens, as she reached the fourth rounds of both the majors before being dumped out by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Jennifer Brady respectively.

The defeat at Flushing Meadows was followed by two first-round clay court exits. While Siniakova outplayed her in Rome, Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan ousted her at Roland Garros.

A winner of 12 singles titles, Kerber loves playing in Melbourne. She won the Australian Open in 2016 and was a semifinalist in 2018. The last two years have seen her reach the fourth round.

The 33-year-old was also a U.S. Open champion in 2016 and a Wimbledon champion in 2018.

Kerber is on a three-game losing streak, hasn’t played for a while, and was recently beaten by her first-round opponent. So it could be a bit of a nervy start for the German on Wednesday.

Siniakova Will Take Confidence from Rome

Former World No. 1 doubles player Katerina Siniakova will be looking to take confidence from her comprehensive straight sets win over Kerber in Rome in September.

The 24-year-old, ranked 59th in singles, won the French Open and the Wimbledon doubles titles with partner Barbora Krejcikova in 2018.

A winner of two WTA titles, Siniakova has shown time and again that she can excel in singles as well. And the 2019 French Open is a testament of that as she upset World No. 1 Naomi Osaka in straight sets to book a place in the fourth round and prevent the Japanese from marching towards her third consecutive major. Madison Keys, however, ended Siniakova’s run with a straight sets win in the Round of 16.

Last year, Siniakova had a 16-15 overall singles record, which included a third round appearance at the French Open and quarterfinal appearance in Strasbourg. She ended the year with a runners-up finish at an ITF event in Dubai.

Kerber v Siniakova Prediction and Tip

The meeting in Rome wasn’t too far back, so that will play on Kerber’s mind, plus she is short of practice. But it’s a new season and the German will like to start afresh. Expect the experienced campaigner to battle past her younger opponent.

Tip: Kerber to win: 8/11 (bet365)
