Sofia Kenin v Jessica Pegula Head to Head
This rivalry is still in its early stages and has seen three matches across different circuits.
The first match came at the Dothan ITF competition in 2016 and Pegula needed three sets to get the better of Kenin in that one. Two years later they met in Quebec and again, Pegula came back from a set down to clinch the encounter.
Their most recent meeting was in the World TeamTennis tournament where Kenin lost again, making it 3-0 in favour of Pegula.

Kenin Benefits from Giorgi Retirement
While Kenin won the first set against Camila before the latter retired from the encounter to award the American a passage into the third round, things didn’t look as easy as the American would have preferred.
It started off well for Kenin when she raced off to two breaks of serve and a 3-0 lead but soon after that Giorgi had her revenge with successive break back to level the set at 3-3. Things went on serve till Kenin shrugged off that mid-set drop in intensity to break the Giorgi serve in the 11th game and then served out for the set.
Giorgi retired soon after to give Kenin the match.
Earlier, the world number number four had kick-started her season with a quarterfinal appearance at Abu Dhabi, but had struggled to get there. And then she went down to Maria Sakkari. Can she now hold up to an opponent ranked 60 places behind her but with bit of a psychological advantage over?

Pegula Continues Straight-Set Streak
Having lost to Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this season, Pegula looks to have made a decent comeback here in Melbourne. After having crushed doubles specialist Kristina Mladenovic’s hopes in the first round, winning 6-4, 6-1, the American went on to register another straight-set win over Mona Barthel in the second round.
Pegula won 6-4, 7-5 in a tough encounter that lasted an hour and 22 minutes.
There was a break of serve for Pegula in the very first game, but Barthel levelled things off after a longish fourth game of the opening set. Pegula wasn’t about to take a back-step though as she clinched a decisive break in the seventh game and then served it out to love to win the set.
In the second, Pegula fell a break behind but just as Barthel was to serve to level the match, the American world number 64 broke back and then made it two in two to serve for the match at 6-5. While she had some difficulties in serving it out, Pegula kept her wits about her to complete the win in two.
