Annett Kontaveit  v Christine McHale Head to Head

The pair have met once before at the Miami Open in 2013 when McHale won in straight sets. However, the Estonian was just 17-years-old at the time and she has matured as a player considerably since then.

Kontaveit with a Strong Showing in 2020

Although she won her only senior career title at the Ricoh Open in 2017, Kontaveit can look back fondly on 2020.

She began the year strongly, reaching her first Grand Slam quarter-final in Melbourne, beating Belinda Bencic and Iga Swiatek along the way, before eventually losing to Simona Halep.

She went on, post lockdown, to reach the final in Palermo, only to lose to the Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro.

Kontaveit was seeded 14th at the US Open and reached the fourth round there for the second time before losing to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka.

The tail end of the season was a little disappointing by comparison. She was knocked out in the first round of the French Open and then lost in the second in her last event in Ostrava.

She has played one competitive match in 2021 so far, in Abu Dhabi last month. That did not go so well though – she was beaten in straight sets by the Russian Veronika Kudermetova.

McHale Looking for Improvement after Indifferent Form

McHale reached her first WTA final in 2014, but her golden year was really 2016 when she won her solitary senior tournament, the Japan Open, and clinched two doubles titles as well.

At one point she was ranked as high in the 24 in the world, but has since had to settle fora  place in the lower echelons of the top 100.

2020 was by no means her best year on tour. Her best run came at the Cincinnati Open where she came through the qualifying competition, and went on to progress through to the quarter-finals before losing to Ons Jabeur.

After that, the only time she got beyond the first round of any tournament was at the French Open where she beat the number 22 seed Karolina Muchova, before losing to the Romanian Patricia Maria Tig.

Muchova though got her revenge in the Gippsland Trophy earlier this week, thrashing her in straight sets for the loss of just two games.

Kontaveit v McHale Prediction and Tip

Despite her previous victory over Kontaveit, McHale’s career trajectory has failed to match the Estonian’s since. Kontaveit should win this one comfortably.

Tip: Kontaveit to win: 3/10 (bet365)
