Ash Barty v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

In their only previous meeting which also came in Melbourne, Barty needed just two sets to get past Rogers in the second round of the 2017 Australian Open.

Barty Picks up after Strange Stumble

Having proved to be in fine fettle in her second round win over Ana Bogdan, Barty looked to be on her way to another easy victory to seal her place in the quarterfinal. With three breaks of serve in the very first set, Barty bagelled Marie Bouzkova to begin her march towards what looked like a straightforward win.

Bouzkova managed to hold on to her serve for the first time in the second set and then levelled things out at 2-2. Not too many, however, would have expected Barty to then drop her serve, but more vitally to not regain the break throughout – the Aussie going on to lose 6-4 and know she was in a contest.

The third set was slightly bizarre in the manner in which both players lost their serves so regularly. In fact Barty and Bouzkova exchanged four successive breaks of serve between the second and the fifth game of the final set but two holds later, the Aussie found herself with another, one that proved to be decisive in the end.

Barty won 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and one minute to set up this meeting with Rogers.

Rogers Races Past Martic

Rogers continued to impress as she took down the seventh seeded Petra Martic in the third round to make it to another last-eight stage, following a similar showing at the US Open last season. There she had stunned Elena Rybakina and Petra Kvitova on her way through to the quarters, here she has already taken Martic’s scalp.

Interestingly, despite being ranked lower than her Croatian opponent, Rogers had gone into this encounter as a favourite and she sure played like one.

After an early exchange of breaks, both players held their serves in the first set, pushing it into a tie-breaker. Once there, however, the set fizzled out as Rogers took full control and crushed her opponent’s hopes 7-1.

The second set saw only one break of serve which came in the fourth game and Rogers availed of it before holding to love to take a 4-1 lead. Both players had multiple chances to break the other in the next two games but in the end serves were held and Rogers took the one-break advantage from earlier home.

The American had earlier stunned Fiona Ferro and overcome Rebecca Peterson in the first two rounds of the competition.

Barty v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Rogers’ good form could mean she could trouble her Aussie opponent and we could see a longish encounter here. Expecting a three-setter.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
