Elina Svitolina vs Elise Mertens Head to Head

Svitolina holds a 3-1 lead over Mertens, last meeting her in the Cincinnati Open of 2019. The Ukrainian has won the last 2 meetings against Mertens in straight sets.

2nd Consecutive Quarterfinal for Svitolina

World No. 5 Elina Svitolina is off to a good start in the 2021 WTA Tour. Starting with a quarterfinal run in WTA Abu Dhabi, the 2-time Grand Slam semifinalist has delivered a similar run right here in Melbourne too.

Starting with a bye in the opening round, she first defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 6-4, in a clinical performance. Then, she met the Latvian prodigy Jelena Ostapenko and beat her 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2.

The game lasted for a little over two hours and saw Ostapenko put up a good fight in the first set. However, in the next two, her form took a tumble and Svitolina got back to her winning ways. She managed to win the critical points to see herself through to the final eight.

Should Svitolina succeed in dispatching Mertens, she will most likely find herself facing Naomi Osaka in the semis. That said, the Ukrainian No. 1 did lose to World No. 46 Veronika Kudermetova in Abu Dhabi last month.

Plus, Mertens, in the past, has shown a proclivity to defeat the big guns and upset the order.

Mertens, Enjoying a Good Start to the Season

Playing in her first WTA tournament since the Linz Open last year, Elise Mertens has enjoyed a good run here in Melbourne. The number 7 seed, enjoying a bye, started her run in 2021 with a straight-set win over Mayo Hibi.

She then met the Frenchwoman Carolina Garcia, whom she moved past with 7-6(1), 6-3.

Peaking at World No. 12, the Belgian may not be a player with lots of titles under her belt, but she shows a lot of promise. The 25-year-old ended the previous season with a runner-up trophy in Linz, losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

In fact, she had a very similar run in the 2020 WTA Prague Open too.

Moreover, Mertens is a prolific doubles player, having won the US Open doubles title in 2019. She can most definitely tap into that experience, along with taking inspiration from her wins over top 10 players like Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, and Simona Halep.

Svitolina vs Mertens Prediction and Tip

This will be a tight game but expect Svitolina to come through at the end. We may see this game go into three sets as well.

Tip: Svitolina to win: 2/5 (bet365)
