Anett Kontaveit  v Bethanie Mattek-Sands Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first encounter between the 25-year-old Estonian and her American opponent, who is ten years older.

Kontaveit Comfortable Opening Winner

Kontaveit enjoyed  a comfortable first round win over another American Christine McHale, avenging her one previous defeat to her from eight years ago. The Estonian struggled initially with her serve and had some difficulty holding it, but managed to do so, and then broke McHale in the fourth game, converting her second break point.

Two games later she did it again, and then served out in just over half an hour.

McHale made it harder for her in the second set, as the games became longer, with each point a contest.

The first game of the set featured six deuces and it was only with her third break point that she was able to take an early leading.

The American though was pressuring her own serve now, and she finally achieved a break of her own to level things up. All that good work by McHale though immediately went to waste as she surrendered her own serve once more, and, after Kontaveit held, the American dropped her serve for what proved to be a decisive final time.

Doubles Specialist Mattek-Sands with Rare Singles Win

Most of Mattek-Sands greatest successes have come in doubles, where she is a multi-Grand Slam winner, and that will be her primary focus in Australia this year.

Singles though is a good way of getting in practice for those events, and she will be buoyed by her first round victory in this tournament over Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic, a woman ranked 300 places higher than her in the world.

It was not a high quality match littered with unforced errors on both sides of the net, and, at one stage, each woman appeared to have an aversion to holding serves.

This was illustrated by the first set, which saw three drops of serve by each woman result in a tie-break.

There the first five points went against serve before Mattek-Sands was finally able to hold two of hers. And then she broke once more to finally nudge ahead.

The American appeared to hand that advantage back to the Czech when she dropped her own serve in the third game of the second set. But she immediately broke back, and then twice more, to conclude proceedings in an hour and 45 minutes.

She cannot expect Kontaveit to be so profligate.

Kontaveit v Mattek-Sands Prediction and Tip

This is a complete mismatch, at least on paper. Kontaveit should have far too much for an opponent whose greatest successes have come on a doubles court.

Tip: Kontaveit to win: 3/10 (bet365)
