This will be the first meeting between the 35-year-old Wawrinka and the 28-year-old Bolt.

Wawrinka Rallies to Beat Kukushkin

2014 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka began his preparations for the Melbourne slam on Wednesday with a come-from-behind win over Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin in the Round-of-32 of the Murray River Open.

The Swiss, who got a first-round bye, fell behind after a closely contested first set, but got back in the groove in the next two to get his season off to a winning start.

Playing for the first time since going down to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters in November, the World No. 18 needed an hour and 57 minutes to dispatch the Kazakh 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

A former World No. 3 and winner of 16 singles titles, Wawrinka struck 14 aces, won 81 percent of his first serve points, saved four of five break points, and converted four of seven to advance into the next round.

Wawrinka, who tested positive for coronavirus at the end of 2020, had mixed results last season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, semifinals in Doha and the last eight in three other tournaments. He also featured in a couple of Challenger events in Prague, winning one and reaching the quarterfinals in the other.

Having not won an ATP title since winning in Geneva in 2017, Wawrinka will be aiming to break the drought this season.

Bolt Holds Off McDonald

Alex Bolt of Australia outlasted American Mackenzie McDonald in a two-and-a-half hour second-round contest on Wednesday.

The World No. 174 converted six of 11 break points and saved three of seven to oust the American 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-5.

In the first round on Monday, Bolt had come back from a set down to beat fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

A five-time champion at the Challenger and Futures level, Bolt reached the third round of the Australian Open two years ago. Having started off well, he will be hoping to give Wawrinka a good fight in the next round.

Wawrinka v Bolt Prediction and Tip

Expect a routine win for Wawrinka. Bolt has definitely shown the ability to dig deep and hold nerves in crucial situations, but he will find the going tough against the more accomplished Wawrinka.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
