Serena Williams v Danielle Collins Head to Head

The world number 11 Serena has never faced Collins, who is 35 places behind her in the rankings.

Serena Registers Identical Wins

Tsvetana Pironkova had tested Serena in the 2020 US Open quarterfinal, winning the first set before going down in three. The next time they were to meet was at the French Open a few weeks later but Serena withdrew from that because of fitness woes.

This was their third match-up – second if you discount the one that never took place in Roland-Garros – and this time Serena was well prepared. There were no injury issues, or slow starts, just Serena being Serena.

Three breaks of serves in the first set saw Serena wrap it up 6-1 and even when Pironkova started to serve better, she was unable to get past her American opponent’s defences.

Serena kept pressuring her Bulgarian opponent in the second set and it was while she served to stay in the match at 4-5, the American finally got the better of it and carved out the straight-set win. The match lasted an hour and 14 minutes, 20 minutes lesser than her second round win over Daria Gavrilova – which she had also won 6-1, 6-4.

The business end of the tournament begins now but Serena has given enough indication there’s something different, something better about her game this season than the previous couple. Can she make it count?

Collins Pulverises Pliskova

It’s not been the best of times for Karolina Pliskova, which is also why despite the obvious difference in the rankings between the two players – 40 places on the WTA charts – Collins wasn’t too far behind as a second favourite heading into their third round encounter.

In a match lasting nearly two hours, Collins needed two hours to get past one of the best servers in the women’s game, thanks mainly to the manner in which she held her own serve. Pliskova broke Collins early, as early as in the first game of the match, but that was the Czech’s only break of the encounter.

Collins broke back in the eighth game to level the match and from there on took the encounter into a tie-breaker where she blew away three set-points before winning it off the fourth.

The second set went to serve all the way through to 6-6 but this time when Collins got herself four match-points she needed just one to complete the upset.

Earlier in the tournament, Collins had already beaten Ysaline Bonaventure and Nina Stojanovic in straight sets but now faces the biggest test of them all.

Williams v Collins Prediction and Tip

Serena starts off at 1/3 to win this and while she is our favourite too given her performance from the first two rounds, Collins could trouble her here. Looks good for a games handicap.

Tip: Games Handicap Collins +4.5: 4/5 (bet365)
