Victoria Azarenka v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

Azarenka leads this match up 2-1, beating the Estonian in a Fed Cup singles rubber in 2011 and the first round of Wimbledon in 2015, both in straight sets. However, Kontaveit won their last meeting in Stuttgart in 2019 via a retirement.

Kontaveit Edges Doubles Specialist Mattek-Sands

After beating Christina McHale quite comfortably in her opening round match, Anett Kontaveit needed to dig deep to hold off another American in the shape of Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The colorful 35-year-old doubles specialist seemed to be putting together an impressive run of results on a singles court, but eventually succumbed to the power of the Estonian.

Kontaveit, seeded sixth this week, started brightly by breaking serve in the opening game. However, she was pegged back while serving for the first set. But it was a tale of unforced errors of double faults getting in each other’s play. Kontaveit ultimately secured the decisive break in game 12 to take the set.

The world no.23 repeated the trick in the second set which was highly competitive, garnering a break at the tail end of the match and serving it out. She won 7-5 7-5 in three hours and three minutes.

After a day’s rest, fatigue should not be a concern for Kontaveit, who perhaps subconsciously needed a long match to refine her game for more difficult tests in the coming days, starting with a meeting against the two-time Australian Open champion.

Azarenka Saved Match Points To Stay Alive

Victoria Azarenka will breath a huge sigh of relief after seeing off Yulia Putintseva by taking advantage of the newly-introduced scoring system. Tennia Australia, in consultation with the WTA decided to shorten matches in order to beat the Sunday deadline of completing all lead-up events before the Australian Open.

For Azarenka’s opponent, Yulia Putintseva, she must feel hard done by. The fiery Kazakh had restored parity by taking the second set 6-1, with momentum shifting back on her side. Azarenka seemed to be on crutches at the start of the third set.

It was the Belarusian’s first match of the season after skipping the Abu Dhabi Open and there was an element of rustiness in her game at times. This was expected as she was given a BYE in the first round due to her higher ranking and had been under hard quarantine.

The two-time Australian Open winner fought back from deficits, in the first set and the third set ten-point tiebreak. Putintseva lead 5-1 in the decider and held multiple match points on her racket at 9-7, but could not close it out, handing Azarenka passage into the quarterfinals in her first tournament of the year.

Azarenka v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

These are two of the biggest power-hitters on the WTA tour, but it is Kontaveit who seems to have wind in her sails right now. Expect the fit Estonian to have the edge.

Tip: Kontaveit to win: 11/8 (bet365)
