Shapovalov Struggles in ATP Cup

It has been a slow start to the season for the Canadian Shapovalov, who lost both his singles matches in the ATP Cup to kick-start the year. And to be fair to him, it wasn’t as if those losses came at the hands of low-ranked players causing shocks.

In his opener, Shapovalov fell 7-5, 7-5 to the world number Novak Djokovic – who would later win his second singles match as well. This was followed by a defeat at the hands of Alexander Zverev but not before he had fought tooth and nail, going down in three sets and two tie-breakers.

Unfortunately for Shapovalov, that makes it six defeats in a row now after the Canadian had ended the previous season on a four-match losing streak as well. It began at the semifinal of the St. Petersburg Open where again, it was a loss to a favourite, Andrey Rublev, before he lost in the first rounds of Cologne, Vienna and Sofia.

He now faces one of the toughest unseeded opponents he could have imagined as his first round opponent.

Sinner Enters with Lot of Confidence

At the time of writing this preview, Sinner had made it to the semifinal of the ATP tune-up tournament being played in Melbourne and still unbeaten. Three back to back straight-set wins for Sinner meant he would kick-start the Australian Open with a lot of confidence under his belt irrespective of the result of the semifinal.

And this follows some of the highest praise he could have got as a 19-year-old with the world number one Novak Djokovic calling him the future holder of the same ranking.

Sinner, who is playing in just his second edition of the Australian Open and only his sixth Grand Slam overall, would already fancy his chances here.

Sure, he would have preferred to start off against a lower-ranked player in the first round of a major given he would rise to 34th in the world if he even reaches the final in the lead-up tournament but as seeded opponents go, Shapovalov’s form should fill him up with some hope.

Shapovalov v Sinner Prediction and Tip

On paper it’s hard to distinguish between the two for the favourites’ billing but bookmakers have Sinner starting out at 8/11 while Shapovalov is 1/1 to win this. Shapovalov might not have won any of his matches this season but that does not count for too much given his opponent quality and we are tempted to go with those odds for the Canadian.

Tip: Shapovalov to win: 1/1 (bet365)
