Maria Sakkari v Angelique Kerber Head to Head

Angelique Kerber brings a 2-0 head-to-head record in this encounter. She beat the Greek in Hong Kong in 2016, and the Rome Masters in 2018, both in straight sets.

Sakkari Continues Sizzling Form

Sometimes a good pre-season is a precursor of good form at the start of a new season. But far from it, Maria Sakkari was playing exceptionally well even before the end of 2020.

The tenacious Greek has kept the ball rolling in Melbourne, dispatching the Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez 6-2 6-2. The 18-year-old lefty had beaten Sloane Stephens for the umpteenth time in her first match and was eager to punish any complacency from her 25-year-old opponent who was playing in her first match since arriving in Australia.

But Sakkari who is fresh from a semifinal run at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Open last month, produced a tide of measured groundstrokes to break Fernandez on seven occasions. It was a display that even the fifth seed was taken by surprise given just how little practice she had since stepping out of quarantine.

Sakkari’s numbers in that win were impressive. She spent 82 minutes bullying the 18-year-old to give up 23 out of 36 points behind her first serve. She also won 30 out of 55 points on her own first and second serves.

Following her four wins at the Emirati capital, she has now won more matches (five) to start this new season than during the previous season (one, between Brisbane and Adelaide).

Kerber Finds Rhythm In Beating Jabeur

It has been a difficult 18 months for Angelique Kerber who still remains hopeful of returning to her glory heydays. But the 2016 Australian Open winner cannot turn back time. She recently turned 33, and has been plagued by injury troubles since the start of last season.

Kerber did not play anything remotely close to a full schedule in 2020, that was despite coronavirus pandemic wiping out nearly half of the tennis calendar. She played 13 matches overall, winning seven and losing the other six.

Her best results came at the Majors, where she made the second week of the Australian and US Open. And apart from that, there were a handful of insipid and uninspiring defeats in the first round. There was also a persistent thigh injury which forced her to sit out for seven months after losing in the fourth round of Australian Open last year.

The German has returned with a point to prove. She made her appearance noticeable with victory over Tunisia’s finest Ons Jabeur in the second round of the Grampians Trophy to follow up from her opening round win over Katerina Siniakova.

Sakkari v Kerber Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is in terrific form and Kerber is only just finding her rhythm after a tumultuous year. Despite the German possessing a good record against Saturday’s opponent, it is worth pointing out Sakkari is more accomplished player nowadays.

Tip: Sakkari to win: 4/6 (bet365)
