Sofia Kenin v Maddison Inglis Head to Head

This will be the first time that USA’s Kenin and Aussie youngster Inglis will be clashing in a competitive encounter.

Defending Champion Kenin in Bit of a Form Issue

It’s probably nothing to write about and it might not even worry Kenin too much but she does enter the Australian Open as both, a defending champion and one who has been slightly underwhelming in the two tournaments she has played this season.

At the Abu Dhabi Open, Kenin did make it to the quarterfinal, winning three matches in row to get there, but two of those wins weren’t quite convincing. Against Kirsten Flipkens she was down a set when her opponent retired from the encounter while Yulia Putintseva took the first set off her before the American managed to win the next two.

And then Maria Sakkari crashed her party in the last eight, registering a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win.

Something similar happened at the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne in the lead-up to the Australian Open. She scraped to a win in the opening set against Camila Giorgi, before her opponent retired from their opening round match and then needed three sets to edge out Jessica Pegula in the second.

Her stay in the tournament came to an end in the quarterfinal when Garbine Muguruza registered a crushing 6-2, 6-2 win.

Wildcard Inglis’ Not Played Too Much at the Highest Level

With five singles title on the ITF circuit, it was only natural that the 130th-ranked Aussie Inglis tried to carve her way into the top drawer. Unfortunately for her, she hasn’t found her mojo at the WTA level yet, having got the opportunities to play in a few of the tournaments over the years.

Around a year ago, Inglis had hit her best ranking on the circuit, following her wins at the Perth and Burnie ITF competitions but since then she has been more visible on the UTR Pro Tennis tour. She had won 10 of the 11 matches she played in last July on that circuit and then was 4-9 in a later series held in December.

Unfortunately for Inglis, she didn’t have the best of starts to the season when she fell in the first round of the Yarra Valley Classic competition, losing to Rebecca Peterson. And as things stand, she now faces the defending champion, making it doubly difficult to win her first ever Grand Slam main draw match.

Kenin v Inglis Prediction and Tip

Kenin is a whopping 1/20 to win this as you would expect, and even a straight-set win is a mere 1/5. Given her recent troubles, we could look at the games market, but a straight-set win looks a good risk-free bet.

Tip: Kenin to win in straight sets: 1/5 (bet365)
