Podoroska, WTA Newcomer of 2020

Podoroska was named WTA Newcomer of the Year for 2020 for her achievement in rising up the world rankings by more than 200 spots and for her consistent level of performances.

Undoubtedly the highlight of her season was the French Open where she made history by becoming the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals, but she also won two ITF titles earlier in the season, and was a beaten finalist in the doubles at the Prague Open.

A firm believer in neuro-science, she practices mental training and has attributed that to her improved performances on court.

She has already played five competitive matches in 2021 – she lost in the first round in Abu Dhabi, but, last week, at the Yarra Valley Classic, she reached the quarter-finals, beating Petra Kvitova in the process. She eventually lost to Marketa Vondrousova in a second-set tie break.

This is her first appearance in the main draw at the Australian Open.

McHale Hoping to Overturn Poor Grand Slams Record

By contrast, McHale has been competing at the Australian Open since 2009, but she has never got further than the third round, and her best run here cane back nine years ago. In fact, her record in Grand Slams is poor generally, and she only has a win percentage of 35% in all the matches she has played in the four tournaments in her career.

Her best year was in 2016 when she won her solitary single title and won two doubles’ events as well. Since then, it has been a slow drift down the world rankings.

2020 was by no means her best year on tour – her only performance of note was at the Cincinnati Open where she came through qualifying to reach the quarter-finals, only to lose to Ons Jabeur.

She has played just the one competitive match so far this year, last week in the Grampians Trophy. That did not go particularly well for her though – she was well beaten in straight sets by the world 23, Anett Kontaveit of Estonia..

Podoroska v McHale Prediction and Tip

Podoroska is tipped to win her first ever match in the main draw in Melbourne. Not only is she higher-ranked, but she also is in better recent form than McHale.

Tip: Podoroska to win: 3/10 (bet365)
