Adrian Mannarino v Dennis Novak Head to Head

Mannarino’s Struggles Piling

Not even a change in continent would bring a change in fortunes for Adrian Mannarino. Having ended the 2020 season winning 10 of his last 14 matches across four tournaments, the unorthodox Frenchman is 1-2 for the new season. He lost in the first round of Delray to Cameron Norrie, and the second round of Murray River Open to Marcos Giron.

Historically, Mannarino has always been a slow starter. His game is tailor-made to play a lot of matches and in succession, for him to show his temperament.

Last season, in a truncated tennis year, the 32-year-old left-hander won 20 matches, but none of those wins came in the opening month of the season where he lost in the first round of Doha, Auckland and Australian Open. His shocking run of results showed no signs of abating, and a return to the Challenger tour saw him end his barren spell.

The world no.35 won his 14th career title on the Challenger tour with victory in Monterrey last March. Mannarino drew a lot of confidence with that title triumph and he played remarkably well following the tour’s resumption.

Can he avoid an upset against Austria’s world no.100?

Novak’s Never Won A Match At Australian Open

It almost feels surreal writing this headline. But not to confuse with Novak Djokovic, the winner of eight Australian Opens; Austria’s Dennis Novak is still chasing for his maiden Australian Open main draw win. In two previous attempts, the world no.100 received the tough luck of the draw, as he was pitted against Dimitrov and Hubert Hurkacz.

The match against Hurkacz last year served as a springboard for Novak’s breakthrough on the main tour despite the heartbreak confined in a five-set defeat. He led Poland’s No.1 by two sets to love, but could not sustain his level for the third or fourth set, and eventually crumbled when the match headed into Iron Man territory.

It was not all doom and gloom. There were a few positives to pick from the 2020 season. There was a first tour-level quarterfinal on the indoor hard court of Cologne and a place inside the top 100 for the first time.

Novak began the new season as Austria’s No.2 singles player, stepping out from Dominic Thiem’s shadow and securing one of his best wins at the ATP Cup last week when he beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Although that result was not enough to guarantee his country’s progress, he has attained the required level to make a splash on Monday.

Mannarino v Novak Prediction and Tip

It feels like Adrian Mannarino is hitting through mist at the moment. He tends to play his best tennis after accumulating matches in succession. He is still finding his range and that makes Novak good value to spring an upset.

Tip: Novak to win: 11/8 (bet365)
