Borna Coric v Guido Pella Head to Head
In the only previous match between these two players, it was Pella who came up trumps on the hard court surface of the Chengdu Open of 2017.

Coric Basking in Kyrgios Win
While Coric would have loved to go further than his quarterfinal exit at the Murray River Open competition in Melbourne in the lead-up to this opening major of the season, his elation at having overcome old foe Nick Kyrgios should give him a lot of confidence.
Having gone into their second round match with a head to head that read 2-2, Coric edged ahead at the expense of a rival who has gone after him on social media in a verbal spat.
Coric, who was once a world number 12 before falling to his current ATP ranking of 25th, also had bit of mixed season last year. He made the quarterfinal at the US Open and was the losing finalist at the St. Petersburg Open but had very little going his way otherwise.
Incidentally, that was his maiden appearance in the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam and his next aim would be shrug off his poor set of results at the Australian Open. In five of his six appearances there, Coric has been bundled out in the first round but did make it as far as the fourth round in the 2019 edition.

Pella 1-1 at the ATP Cup Singles
Argentina had the misfortune of being drawn in the same group as Russia, who went on to win the ATP Cup in the end, pouching all their singles matches through Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. And as a result, even Guido Pella was one of those to face the full force of Rublev as an opponent, falling 6-1, 6-2 in the first singles match of the season.
Pella overcame Yoshihito Nishioka in the second singles match for Argentina, winning 6-3, 7-6 to register his first victory of the season. And that would have come as a huge relief for the Argentine who had an awful last year.
Before the pandemic struck in 2020, Pella had managed a couple of wins at the ATP Cup and a third round appearance at the Australian Open but the latter portion of the season saw him play just six matches and lose four of them.
Formerly a world number 20, he has now fallen to 43rd in the world and while he can still spring the odd surprise, it would be interesting to see if he tests Coric here.
Coric v Pella Prediction and Tip
Coric is 1/10 to win this but the match might not be as one-sided as the odds seem to suggest. While we reckon Coric will still be a favourite, Pella could steal at least a set off his opponent.
Tip: Pella to win a set – Yes: 11/10 (bet365)
