Venus Williams v Sara Errani Head to Head

There have been four previous matches, all of which came between 2011 and 2014, and Venus Williams leads the head to head 3-1. Venus had won their first three matches in straight sets before Errani pulled one back at the 2014 US Open where she needed a final set tie-breaker to get past the American.

In 2015, they also played in an exhibition match in Hua Hin which Errani won.

Errani Ekes Out Comeback Win

A former world number five, Errani fell behind in the race thanks mainly due to her off-court struggles but that hasn’t stopped her from competing, fighting and at times even getting under the skin of the opposition. The latter wasn’t quite on show in her opening round match but it was her grittiness that saw her through in a match that swung multiple times.

Errani needed three sets and more than two hours to carve out a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over the seeded and favourite Wang Qian after she had fallen 4-1 behind in the final set. The Italian broke back immediately in the next game, held serve and then made it her second break in a row to level the proceedings.

And with her Chinese opponent having suddenly lost her rhythm, Errani first saved five break-points while serving at 4-4 and then converted the first match-point she got to finish off the match.

Venus Staves off Fellow Veteran Challenge

Drawn to play Kirsten Flipkens, a Belgian veteran, in the first round of this tournament, the 40-year-old Venus overcame the loss of her serve in the first set to fire away to a straight-set win.

Venus was coming into this match with three successive opening round exits at Grand Slams, having won just one WTA-level match all of the last season.

However, against Flipkens, her game looked a lot tighter and once she had retaliated with a break back of serve in the eighth game herself, there was no looking back for the American.

Venus broke Flipkens as the latter served to stay in the first set and then again in the fourth game of the second set to help herself to a 4-1 lead. And with the momentum in her favour, Venus then made it a second break in the eighth game to wrap up the encounter in an hour and 32 minutes, winning 7-5, 6-2.

The American had earlier won her opening round match against Arantxa Rus at the Yarra Valley Classic before falling to Petra Kvitova in the second. A hard-fought encounter against the Czech there, albeit in a defeat, would have given her a lot of confidence and that showed in her opener here.

Venus v Errani Prediction and Tip

While Errani, who is a qualifier here, did manage to eke out a comeback back here, there is no doubting Venus’ recent form makes her a favourite. Backing the American to make the third round.

Tip: Venus Williams to win: 4/7 (bet365)
