Serena Williams v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head

There has been a match before between Serena and Stojanovic.

Serena Lands Laura Blow

It was never meant to be too much of a test for Serena Williams as she kick-started her quest for her 24th Grand Slam but the manner in which she came through in her first round match against Laura Siegemund should send out warning signals to everyone else.

Serena did start off slowly, getting broken in the very first game of the match but unlike some of the previous times, she hit her straps rather quickly after that. Siegemund saved a couple of break-points in the second game only to drop serve and after that was broken twice more by the former world number one.

The series of Siegemund breaks continued in the second set – two more at the start made it five in a row – and while her German opponent finally held serve in the fifth game, it was a case of too little, too late for her.

And the error-filled encounter ended the way you would expect, with Siegemund serving a meek double-fault to get broken for the sixth time in the encounter.

The world number 11 had earlier started off the season with a semifinal entry at the Yarra Valley Classic tournament in the week leading up to this but had withdrawn from that last-four encounter because of fitness concerns.

Stojanovic Bounces Out Begu

The Serb, ranked 99th in the world, had gone into her first round match against Irina-Camelia Begu at nearly 3/1 odds to win the contest. An hour and 43 minutes later, Stojanovic had won her first ever match in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, defeating Begu 6-3, 6-4.

The difference between the two players turned out to be their second serve. While both got a similar percentage of their first serves in and won similar number of points, Stojanovic attacked her opponent’s second serve way better.

While Stojanovic won 54% of her second serve points, Begu managed to grab just eight of 25. In turn, that helped Stojanovic break the Romanian four times, while herself saving eight of the 10 she faced.

Serena will be a way stiffer opponent, and what Stojanovic would like to do is to improve her first serve percentage which was 64% in her opener.

Serena v Stojanovic Prediction and Tip

The manner in which Serena came through against Siegemund points to the kind of form that the American is in and it would need someone of a solid pedigree to get past her. It would be a surprise if Stojanovic registered too many games, let alone a set or the match here.

Tip: Serena to win in straight sets: 1/3 (bet365)
