Dasun Lajovic v Alexander Bublik Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 30-year-old Serb, and the man from Kazakhstan, who is seven years younger.
Lajovic Taken All the Way by Ukrainian Qualifier
Lajovic was pushed all the way in his first-round match by the veteran Ukrainian qualifier, Sergiy Stakhovsky, the world 201.
The number 23 seed was under pressure on his serve from the start and, having saved two break points, he could not prevent Stakhovsky converting a third to serve out for the first set.
Gradually the momentum shifted in the second set, and this time it was the Stakhovsky serve that was under pressure. Lajovic broke twice and, although he gave one of them back, he was able to level the match.
The Serb at this point seemed to have seized control and an early break in the third, which he later consolidated with another break put him in control of proceedings.
Any hopes that he had that the veteran would just roll over in the fourth set were soon dashed.
Every point was fiercely contested and the advantage swung first one way and the other. Each had dropped their serve twice by the time that Stakhovsky broke once more to take the match into a fifth set.
That could have gone either way – both men had chances to break. In the end, the match was decided by the tenth game in which Lajovic forced three match points only for them all to be saved, However, it proved to be fourth time lucky as he crawled over the line.

Bublik Edges Tough Opening Opponent
Bublik was given a much tougher first round assignment in the form of the world number 58, Aljax Bedene of Slovakia, who once represented Great Britain.
The match began with the pair swapping service breaks, but it began to settle down, and one more break was enough to give Bublik the first set.
Again, the pair swapped service breaks in the second, with Bedene in particular, struggling with his serve, and when Bublik broke once more to take a two-set lead, he had hopes of returning to the locker room early.
Bedene, though had other ideas. He tightened up his game and, with the third set going with serve, forced the decisive break to take the match into a fourth set.
That saw few chances on either side, until Bedene dropped his serve to love. Bublik seized his chance and served out, clinching victory with his second match point.
Lajovic v Bublik Prediction and Tip
Although Lajovic is the higher ranked player and the seed, he is far happier on a clay court, and had enormous problems beating the Ukrainian qualifier. Bublik’s game is much better suited to Melbourne and he will start the clear favourite.
Tip: Bublik to win in straight sets: 2/1 (bet365)
