Ugo Humbert v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head
The only meeting between these two players took place in Acapulco last year, and it did not last beyond one set. Humbert led 6-3, when Kyrgios retired with a wrist injury. The Australian’s title defense in Mexico came to an end, and he never played another match in 2020.

Humbert Earns Maiden Australian Open Win
Third time is indeed a charm. Ugo Humbert made it third time luck as he beat Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan to earn his maiden Australian Open win. He lost to compatriot Jeremy Chardy at the 2019 edition, and last year he was beaten in four sets by Australia’s John Millman.
However, following a breakout season in 2020, he was bound to break his Melbourne duck. Despite dropping the third set in a tiebreaker, Humbert had a largely untroubled afternoon against the world no.106 on a day when France lost a handful of its star players to an early exit.
In two hours and 45 minutes, the French left-hander did not lose any of his service games, saving all six of break point chances carved out by Uchiyama. The 22-year-old was also hitting sweetly and with precision. There were 14 unreturned serves, and he won 80% of first serve points.
After suffering a shocking defeat to James Duckworth at the Murray River Open, Humbert has answered back on his fitness and sharpness levels with a decent four-set win. Can he keep up against the mercurial talent of Nick Kyrgios on Wednesday?

Kyrgios Far From From Vintage, But Wins
With Nick Kyrgios the tantrums almost invariably never stop. He had a comfortable first round win over Portuguese qualifier Frederico Ferreira Silva, getting the job done 6-4 6-4 6-4 in precisely two hours. But there were lapses of Kyrgios’ inability to keep his temper in check.
It didn’t take long before fireworks were ignited. After Ferreira Silva took a surprise 2-0 lead in the opening set, the third game lasted 15 minutes, with eight break point chances on offer. Kyrgios finally took one and levelled. The mercurial Aussie then yelled at his player’s box, apparently for someone’s girlfriend, whom he wanted out of his box.
That did not distract Kyrgios from taking the first two sets, where he served impeccably. Kyrgios who felt his knee acting up in last week’s defeat to Borna Coric at the Murray River Open, tried to shorten up points. He made 23 steps to the net and won 19 points. He landed 80% first serves in, and smacked 14 aces.
The 25-year-old made the second week of his home Slam last year, and his best achievement came in 2015 when he made the quarterfinal.
Humbert v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip
It is difficult to ascertain Nick Kyrgios’ headspace. It is either bang or bust. One moment there is brilliance, then there is complete meltdown. He might win the odd set here, but Humbert should win the raffle.
Tip: Humbert to win: 1/1 (bet365)
