Medvedev Aiming for Sweet 16

It’s been a while since Medvedev lost a competitive tennis match. To be more precise it was at the Vienna Open, in the quarterfinals, he went down to Kevin Anderson in straight sets when the Russia last fell to an opponent.

Since then, he has won the Paris Masters, grabbed the year-ending ATP Finals and then helped Russia win the ATP Cup before dismantling Vasek Pospisil in the first round here at the Australian Open. In doing so, he has gotten past every top player there is to get past except Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roger Federer – having not played either!

And so now when he takes on the 99th-ranked Spaniard, whose highest ranking is 72nd and who has won a grand total of one ATP tournaments – and that on clay – it’s difficult to see how Medvedev can lose. Complacency could be one strong reason but Medvedev has looked like a man wanting to make his form count at a Grand Slam and he is one of the strongest contenders here outside of Novak Djokovic – going down to Carballes Baena doesn’t sound like a possibility.

Carballés Baena

Playing the 94th-ranked Attila Balazs in his opener, Carballes Baena was a strong favourite thanks to the former’s struggles in recent past. And while Carballes Baena had himself lost in the only match he played in the lead up to the Australian Open, he was a whopping 1/10 odds to take the opener.

That’s how it turned out, although Carballes Baena would have preferred not to spend as much time on the court as he did.

He lost the second set after having taken the first in a tie-breaker and at that instant, the Spaniard looked vulnerable for more grief. Fortunately for him, he got him game together and carved out a four-set win to establish his spot in the second round.

In doing so he has won a main draw match at the Australian Open for the first time but as opponents go, Medvedev would be the last one he would have liked to face to double that count.

Medvedev v Carballés Baena Prediction and Tip

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see Medvedev start off as 1/100 to win this one, and 1/7 to do that in straight sets. Games market looks interesting and we will be going with the under option here.

Tip: Under 26.5 in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
