Fabio Fognini v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

Fognini Reversing a Dry Spell
It’s still some way off but it does look like Fognini has broken the spell of bad on-court fortune he was facing. Intriguingly, the last time he had a good run in any competition was at the Australian Open of the previous season, before he hit that bad form.
A first round exit at Rotterdam and Dubai before the pandemic break and opening exits at three of the four tournaments after that break meant he had won just one match from six competitions. And then coming into this season, he was sent packing in the second round of the Antalya Open by Jeremy Chardy while going down 6-3, 6-2 to Dennis Novak at the ATP Cup.
It was probably while playing for his country that Fognini’s passion got rekindled, and he won the next two singles matches to take his side to the final. And while he went down 6-1, 6-2 to Andrey Rublev in that final, he sure looks like he has turned a corner.
in the first round here, he was up against Pierre-Hugues Herbert and was only a slight favourite at 8/11. Fognini played like a man possessed, delivering a crushing 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win and moving into the second round. His section of the draw does seem a bit open at the moment but by the looks of it, Fognini will want to focus on a result at a time.

Caruso’s Steady Rise as a Late Bloomer
28-year-old Caruso is a late bloomer, having broken into the top-200 only in 2018 and touched a career-best of 95th in the following year. And then, despite the pandemic, Caruso inched forward to becoming the 76th best player in the world thanks to a third round appearance at the US Open, a quarterfinal at the Sofia Open and a runner-up at the Parma Challenger.
Which is why when he made it to the third round at the Great Ocean Road Open, beating Andreas Seppi and Tennys Sandgren it came as no surprise.
And which is also why his punishing 6-2, 6-4 6-3 victory over Henri Laasonen makes for perfect sense after having gone into the encounter as 1/2 favourite to win it.
What now remains to be seen is if he can give the 17th-ranked countryman a run for his money despite being a few places below him in the rankings.
Fognini v Caruso Prediction and Tip
Fognini is 4/7 to win this, but we do think Caruso has the game to challenge his opponent and as a result we could see at least four sets in this encounter. Opting for the games market.
Tip: Over 38.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
