Karolina Pliskova vs Danielle Collins Head to Head

The pair met as recently as the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne last week. Collins won that encounter in the WTA 500 event with 7-6(5), 7-6(3).

Collins Exhibiting a Brilliant Form

Danielle Collins has a special connection with the Australian Open. After all, it was here in Melbourne that she was propelled to fame and glory, following her semifinal run in 2019.

It was also here in Australia that she registered a series of wins against top 10 players like Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic. So obviously, it is only reasonable to expect Collins to continue the same performance this time around too.

Last year, she made it as far as the second round but later on in the season, she made up for it with a quarterfinal run in the French Open. While she eventually fell to the reigning Aus Open champion Sofia Kenin, Collins beat Garbine Muguruza – two-time Grand Slam champion, to reach the quarters.

That said, the 27-year-old American has had a decent start to the season, following that hiatus after the Roland Garros. In the Yarra Valley Classic, she reached the fourth round before succumbing to Serena Williams, but only after putting up a tough fight. She lost the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-10.

Currently ranked World No. 40, Collins beat Ana Bogdan in the opener here in the Grand Slam with 6-3, 6-1. The match lasted for a little over an hour and saw Collins strike 30 winners and keep a first-serve win rate of 73%.

Pliskova Clinical in Round One

Karolina Pliskova got off to a clinical start here in Melbourne as she dispatched Jasmine Paolini 6-0, 6-2, in under 50 minutes. It was among Pliskova’s most efficient and ruthless performances, as she dismantled the Italian with 15 winners to Paolini’s 3.

Following a year of mixed results in 2020 that saw the Czech win the Brisbane International and become the runner-up in the Italian Open, Pliskova decided to join hands with Sascha Bajin in the coaching department. Bajin has previously worked with Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.

It is yet to be seen how this partnership pans out for the pair, given that these are still early days. The number 6 seed is yet to win a Grand Slam title and perhaps, with Bajin’s help, she may be able to do so.

If the start to her season is any indicator of this, then things may prove to be a bit tricky for the World No. 6. She lost in the second round in WTA Abu Dhabi and the Yarra Valley Classic, respectively to Anastasia Gasanova and Collins.

Pliskova vs Collins Prediction and Tip

Pliskova has a strong pedigree but Collins has the form. This is a game that can go either way but expect over 19.5 games in the match. Moreover, backing Collins to win here wouldn’t be the worst bet to make.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
