Ash Barty v Daria Gavrilova Head to Head
On the WTA tour, these two players have faced off thrice with Barty leading 2-1. Gavrilova had won their first ever meeting on clay in 2017, before Barty came back in 2018 to level things off at the Sydney International and then took a lead in Madrid in 2019.
There had also been one previous meeting at the ITF circuit which came in 2012 and Barty had won that match too.

The Barty Party Has Begun
There were a few worries about Barty having to play successive matches over a very little period of time with the world number one having reached the final of the Yarra Valley Classic last week and kick-starting the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Typically, the top players do not play in competitions in the lead-up to any major and even if they do play, like has been the case this time because of the pandemic, many of the top players either withdraw or don’t quite stretch themselves towards the business end of the tournament.
Nothing of that sort happened to Barty.
She went on to win the aforementioned title, defeating Garbine Muguruza in the final on Sunday and then came back on Tuesday for her opening round match here at the Australian Open against Danka Kovinic.
The result? A 45-minute, double-bagel served for Kovinic. Which also achieves the purpose of keeping Barty fresh for the sterner challenges ahead.

Gavrilova Ends Sorribes Tormo
Much like Barty, Gavrilova was also a part of the Yarra Valley Classic last week and she won and lost a match apiece. Starting out with a victory against Viktoria Kuzmova, Gavrilova then went down to Serena Williams in straight sets in round two.
Coming into the Australian Open, the wild-card entrant and 387th-ranked Gavrilova then proceeded to overcome Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets.
By winning her opener, Gavrilova doubled her tally for WTA tour wins over the last 18 months, having won only one match over that time-frame – at last year’s French Open where she stunned Dayana Yastremska to reach the second round.
Later she went on to play on the UTR Pro Circuit, where she performed well and would use that confidence to build on her season and improve her ranking following a string of injuries. Unfortunately for her, she might find it a tad difficult to do that in this tournament given her opponent here.
Barty v Gavrilova Prediction and Tip
While Gavrilova has experienced beating Barty once, by current form there looks to be one way this match is headed – in a straight-set win for Barty. She is 1/3 to win in straight sets.
Tip: Barty to win in straight sets: 1/3 (bet365)
