Live Updates
In some of the early results today, two of the Czech players in action, Karolina Muchova and Karolina Pliskova registered straight-set wins to enter the third round. Also joining them there was the in-form Shelby Rogers.
Muchova was quick off the blocks to defeat Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-1 while Pliskova needed some time to get into rhythm in her match against Danielle Collins. Pliskova broke Collins twice in the first set only to get broken back and it was only after the third break did she manage to retain her own service to clinch the set.
It was a lot easier for Pliskova in the second set in which she rattled off six games in a row from being 2-0 down to complete the victory.
Pliskova and Muchova will now face off in the third round. Read preview here.
Rogers had Serbian Olga Danilovic as her opponent who managed to pose very little threat, going down 6-2, 6-3 to the American.
Elise Mertens became another seeded player in the women’s draw to make it to the third round, overcoming a stiff first set tie-breaker against Lin Zhu before completing a straight-set victory.
Preview to Day Four
Half of the second round matches in the tournament have already been played and the rest of them will be played on Thursday, February 11 on both sides of the draw.
Leading the action on day four will be Rafael Nadal who was barely tested in his first round match but much of the attention will be on his back, which has given him enough problems to force him to miss the ATP Cup and make him change his serving style.
Also taking to court will be the world number one in the women’s draw, Ash Barty, who is still hunting for her home Slam and she will be facing Daria Gavrilova in her second round match at the Rod Laver Arena.
Stefanos Tsitsipas isn’t quite one of the top three men’s favourite but a dark horse worth considering as he takes on another Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis, whereas Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina will be the other two who will take to the same court.
The Margaret Court Arena has some excellent matches too with Belinda Bencic taking on Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sofia Kenin facing Kaia Kanepi in two of the youth versus experience battles. Matteo Berrettini, Alex De Minaur and Jessica Pegula will be the others on court.
The Russians Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev are in some solid form in recent times and both will be in second round action at the John Cain Arena. So will be Anett Kontaveit and Fabio Fognini for a place in the third round.
The 1573 Arena will see Elise Mertens, Karen Khachanov and Jennifer Brady among the seeded players, while Borna Coric and Donna Vekic will take to the Court 8 for their second round matches.
