Matteo Berrettini v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

Berrettini leads Khachanov 3-0 with two of those matches having come on grass court surfaces – at Stuttgart and Halle. That very year, in 2019, in Sofia, they played indoors too and Berrettini won that one in three sets as well.

Berrettini Goes Past Qualifier Machac

While Berrettini was an overwhelming favourite to get past Tomas Machac in straight sets, and while he looked like doing just that, a third set blip saw the Italian need help from the fourth set to win his second round match.

Things were going to plan when Berrettini broke Machac once in the first set and twice in the second claim them 6-3, 6-2, and while there were no early breaks of serve in the third, the Italian would have still been favoured to win the tie-breaker. As it turned out, Machac turned on the heat with his opponent serving at 4-5, and Berrettini lost serve and the set.

Berrettini stormed back to break his opponent in the very first game of the next set and completed the rout in the ninth game while Machac served to stay in the match.

This follows a quarterfinal appearance at the Antalya Open where Berrettini lost to Alexander Bublik and a 3-1 win-loss record in the ATP Cup which helped take his team to the final.

Khachanov Crashes Berankis’ Party

After the 196th-ranked Aleksandar Vukic stretched Khachanov to a four-setter in the first round – much like Machac did to Berrettini in the first – the Russian came back strongly to scythe past Ricardas Berankis in straight sets to set up a place in the third round.

Khachanov, who has never gone past the third round at the Australian Open, will now look to defy history in more than one way; his own record at the Australian Open and the head to head against Berrettini.

The Russian had earlier played in the Great Ocean Road competition, reaching the semifinal there before losing to Jannik Sinner. His record this year is already looking better than the way his 2020 season ended, losses in the quarterfinal at the Antwerp Open and the first round of the Vienna Open and Paris Masters.

Can he push his old foe Berrettini here?

Berrettini v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Berrettini is 1/2 to win this and while we expect Khachanov to put up a fight, the Italian is still a favourite.

Tip: Berrettini to win AND Both players to win a set: 8/5 (bet365)
