Marketa Vondrousova v Hsieh Su-wei Head to Head

This will be the second time these two players will be involved in a competitive match with Hsieh having beaten Vondrousova in their first meeting that was held in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. It was a first round win for Hsieh, who then lost to Marta Kostyuk in the second round.

Vondrousova Continues to Oust Lower-Ranked Opponents

Take nothing away from Vondrousova who has made a solid comeback from her surgery in 2019, having now gotten back to her previous best. Hard courts aren’t her favourite surface anyway, but a semifinal at the Yarra Valley Classic Open and now a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open is an indicator of that.

This is the first time she has gotten this far at the Australian Open too, having won just main draw match at a time before this.

That said, Vondrosouva’s draw has been less tricky than some of the others. Like following a first round win over Rebecca Peterson, she had a qualifier in Rebecca Marino in the second. And then Sorana Cirstea after the Romanian made it simpler for her by ousting Petra Kvitova.

Vondrousova handled Cirstea easily, breaking her twice in the first set and then again at 4-4 in the second before serving it out.

And in continuation with the easiness of the draw, she is now up against the world number 71 instead of the 2019 US Open winner and world number nine Bianca Andreescu who was sent packing.

Second Coming for Hsieh?

A three-time Grand Slam winner in women’s doubles, Hsieh has had her time in singles too but only made it to the fourth round of any major competition on three previous occasions. This, after a gap of nearly three years, will be the fourth time that Hsieh will be featuring at this late a stage in a Grand Slam.

Hsieh has already defeated two of the top players in the competition – at least by stature if not by rankings alone. Like the Bianca Andreescu defeat in the second round was one of the biggest upsets in the tournament but even her first round win over Tsvetana Pironkova who had made it to the quarterfinal last US Open can count as an upset.

And then in the third round, Hsieh managed to get past Errani after being 3-5 down in the final set. Her Italian opponent afforded her just one break-point while serving for the match and she converted it into three games in a row to enter the fourth round.

She now has a golden chance of breaking her fourth round jinx and make it to her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.
