Dominic Thiem v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

There have been five matches between these two players before this, spanning between 2016 and 2019. Dimitrov leads 3-2 including wins in the last two matches they played at the 2017 ATP Finals and the 2019 Paris Masters.

More recently they also featured in the ill-fated Adria Tour where Thiem defeated Dimitrov in straight sets.

Thiem Survives Five-Set Thriller

When it is Nick Kyrgios playing you in Australia, you aren’t playing an opponent.

You are also playing his antics, the drama and the partisan crowd and to go with a highly-talented, if slightly erratic and implosive player in the form of Kyrgios.

So when Thiem fell behind two sets to love, it would have been a mixed feeling for Thiem – he was down two sets to all of the above but at the same time would have known he has a chance of recovery against Kyrgios.

And Thiem has done that in crunch situations too, namely at the previous year’s US Open final against Alexander Zverev.

That’s exactly how things panned out too. Thiem made a quiet comeback in the third set, breaking Kyrgios early before turning on the screws by serving it out without facing a single break-point all match. In the fourth, Kyrgios saved a couple of break-points, was then broken in the ninth and when he got the chance to break back, he muffed up his lines.

Thiem served it out and then grabbed the Aussie’s serve in the seventh game of the final set before putting in the final touches.

Dimitrov Yet to Lose a Set after PCB Retirement

Having come into this third round match with straight set wins over Marin Cilic and Alex Bolt in the first couple of rounds, this encounter against Pablo-Carreno Busta was supposed to be his first big challenge. That, however, did not materialise at all for Dimitrov as Carreno-Busta had to withdraw from the match while trailing by a set.

Dimitrov was 6-0, 1-0 up against his Spanish opponent before the latter retired because of illness having taken a medical time-out earlier in the match. The match lasted 38 minutes.

This would be in a sharp contrast to the five, energy-sapping sets that Thiem played in his third round win, and should reduce some of the edge the Austrian has.

Interestingly, Dimitrov himself admitted he was saving some of his energy in the first set of his match which he hopefully can use for his next round against Thiem. Fortunately for him, he has the head to head against the Austrian to back him and while the Bulgarian has typically struggled in the latter stages of tournaments in recent times, he will be no pushover.

Thiem v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

Dimitrov can be expected to push Thiem a little here despite the world number three still managing to capture the win.

Tip: Thiem to win in four sets: 8/5 (bet365)
