Novak Djokovic v Milos Raonic  Head to Head

The players have met 11 times and Djokovic has won all the previous meetings. They had also met last year at the Australian Open quarter-finals and it was a straight sets win for the Serb.

Form and Injury Worries Lie Between Djokovic and a Ninth Title

World number one Novak Djokovic arrives in Melbourne in search of an 18th Grand Slam and a ninth Australian Open title. If his opening match was anything to go by, he sent a sharp and clear message to all his opponents. The Serb dropped only six games in his opening match against French veteran Jerimy Chardy and looked clinical through the night.

The smooth sailing did however end with the opener. The Serb was pushed to four sets in the second round by American Frances Tiafoe, who for most of the second and third set matched Djokovic point by point.  However, experience prevailed and the number one seed prevailed in the fourth.

In his third round match against rising American Taylor Fritz, it was a smooth first two sets for Djokovic, but then an injury early in the third hurt his mid-section muscle and he looked immobile and uncomfortable for most of the next set and a half. This coupled with some big serving by the American resulted in the match going into the fifth set, where it was a mix of adrenaline and nerves that made the difference and Djokovic won the decider 6-2.

Djokovic mentioned post match that it felt like a muscle tear and he was unsure of his participation here on. His recovery remains to be seen as it will be a crucial factor in deciding how he performs going into the latter stages of the tournament.

In-Form Raonic Eyes An Opening…

Former world number three Milos Raonic had a mid-career setback with injuries and disappointments, but has done well to comeback strong and return to the top 15 in the world since the start of the tour after the pandemic hiatus. A finalist at the Western & Southern Masters to Novak Djokovic, he also had a good run on the European indoor season at the end of the 2020 season.

After a mixed ATP Cup, Raonic has looked in excellent serving form this week at the Australian Open, and has backed it up well with an improved all round game including his return of serve. A straight sets win against Argentine Federico Coria, was followed by a four setter against Corentin Moutet of France, before his third round encounter against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.

The Hungarian was coming off a big win against Stan Wawrinka and the first two sets here were evenly matched and split. The physicality and the duration of the Wawrinka match took its toll on Fucsovics, who looked jaded by the third set and Raonic ran away with it thereafter winning the last two sets 6-2,6-2. A former semi-finalist here, Raonic is again in a fourth round and will be hoping for a career best performance to outlast a player of the caliber of Djokovic.

Djokovic v Raonic Prediction and Tip

The biggest question mark here remains around Djokovic’s fitness given the injury scare mid-match against Fritz. Expect a tight match against an in-form big serving Canadian. But, a close to 95% healthy Djokovic should prevail in four sets.

Tip: Djokovic  to win in four sets: 3/1 bet365)
