Medvedev Coming Off Unexpected Five Setter
Medvedev ended 2020 on a strong note with victories at the Paris Masters and the ATP Tour Finals In London. This was followed by an unbeaten run last week at at the ATP Cup and when the Russian cruised through his first two rounds here, he looked ready for another straight sets win against Serbian Filip Krajinovic.
Medvedev started where he left off in the previous rounds, dictating terms on the court and Krajinovic not having lot to offer in response. Not before long, the Russian was up two sets to love, clinching each set 6-3. Despite pressure from the Serb, Medvedev was able to hold his serve early in the third set, but serving to stay in the set, the Russian felt the pressure at 4-5 and lost serve and in turn conceded the set.
Krajinovic got off to a flier in the fourth set breaking Medvedev early and was up 4-1 in no time. The Serb won the set 6-3, taking the match into a decider. The Russian sharpened his game in the final set, racing away to a 3-0 lead, and followed the momentum with three breaks of his serve and clinching the decider 6-0.
Brushing off a much trickier opponent than expected, Medvedev will be looking for a more comfortable win in the next round going into the latter stages of the slam thereafter.

Is the McDonald Revival Run Over For Now?
25-year-old American Mackenzie McDonald had a good run at the Delray Beach and Acupulco tournaments in 2019 that saw him move to just outside the top 50 ranked players in the world. However, it has been a week last season and a half for the American who is now ranked outside the top 150 globally.
The 2021 season seemed to follow suit, with early losses at both Delray Beach & the ATP 250 in Melbourne for McDonald. However, the American’s strong all round play has been on display this week here at the Australian Open.
A four set opening round win against Marco Cecchinato was followed by another similar hard hitting win against the number 22 seed from Croatia, Borna Coric, and a more smooth straight sets win against South African Lloyd Harris.
With three wins behind his back, and the fast courts suiting McDonald for now, he will be looking for a spirited performance against Medvedev, where he starts a clear underdog.
Medvedev v McDonald Prediction and Tip
McDonald has outdone himself this week and Medvedev had a tough third round, but it seems unlikely that the American could do much in this encounter. Expect a straight sets win for Medvedev.
Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/3 (bet365)
