Naomi Osaka v Su-wei Hsieh Head to Head
Other than a match on the ITF circuit, there have been four other matches played between the two and Osaka leads 3-1. All four of those matches came in 2019, and three of them on hard court surfaces on which she leads 2-1.
All three matches on the hard courts went to three sets (which when Hsieh was asked about in her post-match interview, she said, “that’s because Osaka and I love each other so much!”)

Down 3-5, 15-40 in the third set of her fourth round match against Garbine Muguruza, Osaka looked like she could bid her chances of winning another Australian Open a goodbye. But then that’s Osaka hasn’t won her three Grand Slam titles without having endured some extreme pressure and even some tennis heart-breaks.
Very calmly, she held on to her serve, forcing Muguruza to serve for the match and then off the third break-point she got, Osaka broke the Spaniard back.
A game later at 6-5, she had Muguruza down 0-40 on serve, and converted the first of those three match-points to win the encounter.
This was after Osaka had lost a 2-0 lead in the first set to lose 6-4, before falling 2-0 down in the second set and looking for answers. Those came in the form of a break of serve to level things out at 2-2, before she put the pressure back on Muguruza when she served to stay in the set 4-5.
Much like that third set when Muguruza struggled to handle that pressure of serving at 5-6, she lost serve in the second too, going out in three.
Osaka’s 40 winners to 36 unforced errors to her opponent’s 24-28 made the difference in clutch situations.

Hsieh Shock for Vondrousova
Who would have thought this before the start of the tournament? Hsieh, who has been playing singles Grand Slam since 2002, hasn’t once reached the quarterfinal stage, with three fourth round appearances before this.
Doubles trophies have followed, three of them in Grand Slams with one other such final at the Australian Open 2020 where she combined with Barbora Strycova to get to that level. As far as singles goes, however, the results have been few and far between.
Even in the two tournaments she featured in before this tournament, Hsieh went out in the first round at the Yarra Valley Classic Open and the second round at the Abu Dhabi Open, giving no signs of the time to come.
Because those times have seen her overcome Marketa Vondrousova, the 2019 French Open winner and the world number 20 in straight sets to make it to the last eight. She had earlier overcome Tsvetana Pironkova, Bianca Andreescu and Sara Errani as well, making this her best performance by far in more ways than one.
Osaka v Hsieh Prediction and Tip
There is a lot of love between Osaka and Hsieh but that wouldn’t stop the Japanese number one to take this in straight sets. Osaka is a mere 1/10 to win this.
