The 114th-ranked Karatsev, who was making his 10th attempt to make the main draw of the Australian Open, entered the semifinal on a Grand Slam debut, overcoming his hobbling opponent 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 to win the match.
Things looked to be going to script when Dimitrov broke his opponent thrice in the opening set, and when he earned himself seven break-point opportunities in the second, the writing was on the wall.
Except he failed to break his opponent and then got broken to drop the set, before his fitness issues began. Dimitrov failed to chase most of his opponent’s shots in the third set, and by the fourth set, he had taken a medical timeout for what seemed to be a back-related muscle issue.
Speaking on court at the end of the match, Karatsev said:
“It’s an unbelievable feeling. Of course, it’s first time. First time in main draw. First time semis. It’s incredible.”
Karatsev will now take on the winner of the Djokovic-Zverev quarterfinal which will be held later in the day after the women’s singles match between Simona Halep and Serena Williams.
