Bianca Andreescu v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

Andreescu holds a 2-1 lead from their previous three meetings. Begu won at the Fed Cup in 2018, while the Canadian won the first round matches at Indian Wells and in Miami in 2019.

Interestingly, all their previous three faceoffs have gone the distance and Begu has taken the first set on all those occasions.

Andreescu Slowly Regaining Form

2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu moved into the quarterfinals of the Phillip Island Open on Tuesday after her opponent Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan retired following a first set rout.

Coming off a tough second round win over American Madison Brengle, Andreescu dictated terms rights from the outset, winning 85% of first serve points, converting 3 of 7 break points and saving the only one that she faced in the set, to race to a 6-1 lead, before the World No. 83 Diyas retired from the contest.

Making a comeback after a gap of 15 months, a rusty Andreescu battled past Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu in the first round of the Australian Open before being knocked out by Hsieh Su-Wei in the next round.

She got a first-round bye at the Phillip Island Open this week, before having to work hard against Brengle in the Round of 32. Andreescu won the first set in a tiebreak, but the World No. 85 rallied to force the decider. The Canadian, however, got things under control in the third to advance with a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 win.

Andreescu, who captured the U.S. Open title two years ago to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title, struggled with a knee injury at the back end of 2019 and her return to tennis was further delayed due to the pandemic.

The 20-year-old, who began the 2019 season outside of the top 100, soared to her highest-ever ranking of No. 4 that year. The right-hander became the first Canadian in 50 years to win the Canadian Open title, when she beat Serena Williams in the final and then beat Williams again to become the first player ever to win the U.S. Open on main draw debut.

Begu Continues to March Forward

In the quarterfinal, Andreescu will meet Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu, who improved to 6-2 in 2021 with a come-from-behind three-set victory over No. 5 seed Qiang Wang of China on Tuesday.

Having lost the first set in a tiebreak, Begu bounced back by dominating the next two sets to win 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-1. The former World No. 22 converted 9 of 12 break points while saving 8 of 13 against Wang.

The 30-year-old right-hander, who had come into the tournament following a first-round defeat to Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic at the Australian Open, has shown decent form in the tournament.

She started off with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska, before easing past Russia’s Ana Blinkova in the second round on Monday.

This will be the second quarterfinal appearance for the Romanian this year, having reached that far at the Gippsland Trophy just before the start of the Australian Open. Begu beat China’s Zheng Saisai, Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovic and Britain’s Johanna Konta in the first three rounds (all in three sets), before falling to Naomi Osaka in a one-sided quarterfinal.

Andreescu v Begu Prediction and Tip

Begu is in good touch and will test Andreescu. Expect another three-set affair between the two, with the Canadian edging out the Romanian.

Tip: Andreescu to win: 2/5 (bet365)
