Bianca Andreescu v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head
World No. 9 Andreescu has won both of their previous matches, winning in Newport Beach two years ago by dropping just three games on the way, and fighting back from a set down to win in the first round of the French Open, also in 2019.

Andreescu Sees Off Begu Challenge
Canada’s Bianca Andreescu fended off a stiff challenge from Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu to book a place in the semifinal of the Phillip Island Trophy on Wednesday.
The 2019 U.S. Open champion, who returned to court this month after an absence of 15 months due to a knee injury and the pandemic, was stretched to the hilt by the World No. 74, before she finally held her nerves to clinch a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
The Canadian right-hander, who converted six of 16 break points in the match, faced 12 break points herself, saving seven of them. The two-hour-and-31-minute contest witnessed as many as 207 points, with Andreescu winning 105 of them to improve 3-1 in their rivalry. Interestingly all of their four matches have needed a third set to separate the two.
The 20-year-old, who became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat Serena Williams to lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows two years ago, is playing her second tournament in 2021.
She lost to Hsieh Su-Wei in the second round of the Australian Open last week.
Having not taken the court since withdrawing midway from a match against Karolina Pliskova at the WTA Finals in 2019, Andreescu has struggled a bit on her return this month.
She beat Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnesku in a tough three-set first round match at the Australian Open before going down to the Taiwanese. At the Phillip Island Trophy, she had to fight past American Madison Brengle in a three-set Round-of-32 contest. She did find some rhythm against Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, racing to a 6-1 lead before her opponent pulled off, but was made to work hard yet again by Begu in the quarterfinal.
Andreescu, who began the 2019 season outside of the top 100, soared to her career-high ranking of No. 4 that season, thanks to her title runs at the Rogers Cup and the U.S. Open titles.

Bouzkova Holds off Teichmann
Facing Andreescu in the semifinal will be 13th seed Marie Bouzkova, who held off a rallying Jil Teichman in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The Czech, ranked No. 50 in the world, took the first set, but the Swiss rebounded to force the decider. However, Teichmann unfortunately twisted her ankle in the third allowing Bouzkova to run away with the set in the later stages.
The two-hour-and-41-minute contest ended with the 22-year-old Bouzkova winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and sealing a spot in the semis for the first time since her run to the final of the Monterrey Open last year.
Bouzkova, who began the tournament with a win over Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in the first round after the latter withdrew midway, had no problems in dispatching China’s Zhu Lin and Australia’s Gabriella Da Silva Fick on her way to the last eight.
A 12-time winner on the ITF Circuit, the Czech right-hander improved to 6-2 this year. She won her first two rounds at the Yarra Valley Classic before falling to Ash Barty. Her Australian Open challenge ended with a first round defeat to Elina Svitolina.
Bouzkova, who achieved a career-high ranking of 46 last year, had broken into the top 100 in 2019, thanks to her run to the semifinal in the Rogers Cup.
Andreescu v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip
Andreescu has struggled to finish off matches in straight sets, but has shown the ability to dig deep and emerge victorious in close contests. Expect the Canadian to keep her perfect record against Bouzkova intact but she will have to endure another tough test.
Tip: Andreescu to win: 8/15 (bet365)
