Live Updates

Set 3, Game 10

Brady, serving for the match, to make it to her maiden Grand Slam final, has literally jumped out to the court after the break. Remember it’s been very hot and we are in the third set here.

Brady starts off with a very strong serve which Muchova fails to get over the line and follows it up with an ace! What a time to dish that out I tell you. 30-0.

A missed forehand from the American gives Muchova an opening, or may be just bit of relief because one of the rallies of the match follows up and gets Brady firing a winner (after she had failed to close it out twice earlier!)

Another excellent point follows, keeping Muchova alive in the encounter but Brady still has a match-point. What does she do on this one?

Tries a big serve out wide, misses. A second serve, not very strong this time allows Muchova a chance to remain in the rally and a very slightly long shot gets her back on deuce. Wow. That was out by millimeters!

And now another one out, with Muchova getting herself a break-point. What is happening to Brady? She holds back a tad on her second serve and extracts an error off the backhand return to make it deuce yet again, but Muchova is having none of that as she bunts a return down to her forehand that the American fails to get to.

Muchova then shoots a backhand into the net to bring it back to deuce before Brady takes control of the next point early and a backhand error from her opponent gives her a third match-point. Not happening, not on that point for sure as Muchova brings it back to deuce with a backhand return,

An excellent rally later, which included a good return of serve, Muchova is back into the match with a smashing winner that gets her a third break-point! And again, that’s a poor backhand shot which brings it back to the fifth deuce of the game, whoa.

Pressure makes one do interesting things, and that seems to be the case on those last two points as Muchova shanks another backhand long. Brady, however, just cannot get her first serves in, giving Muchova another chance, she remains in the game by attacking her second serve and winning it with a forehand volley cross-court.

Match-point number five follows as Brady gets the gun first serve in, and she converts this one thanks to a Muchova error leading to a gruelling three-set win for the American! First ever Grand Slam final for the 2020 US Open semifinalist Brady!

Set 3, Game 9

Muchova now needs to serve to stay in the match and she starts off well with a rally that goes her way. She has a chance to hit a backhand straight down but attempts a cross-court and sends it wide. A strong forehand winner gives Muchova a lead but then follows it up with an easy forehand miss that would have given her two game-points.

Instead, it’s 30-30, but Muchova manages to keep herself alive by winning the next point. A decent serve right own the middle draws out another error from the Brady racquet, giving the Czech the game.

Now for Brady to serve it out to win it?

Set 3, Game 8

Rally of the match in all probabilities, ending with Brady having to rush to the net to get to a drop-shot from Muchova but fails to get close. Also, the shade is now more than halfway on the court, which is going to make it really tough for both players.

Brady hits an ace to make it 15-15, and a brilliant second serve has been hit right into the chair-umpire! Second time at the very least today!

It was turning out to be another solid rally for the neutral but Muchova then hits one wide in a bid to go for a winner. She compensates that with an excellent return to bring it back to 40-30 for Brady, who then converts the second game-point to win the game. Shouts of “Come Onnn” reverberate through the semi-empty Rod Laver Arena.

Set 3, Game 7

Excellent serving from Muchova in that game and she is suddenly 40-0 on her serve. Brady manages to get to her serve off the next point, and the ensuing rally goes in her favour. Another longish rally ends with Muchova missing a forehand, shanking it into the net, but just as Brady thinks she might have a chance, the Czech manages to wrong-foot her opponent and finish off the game.

Set 3, Game 6

A longish rally starts things off on the Brady serve but Muchova fails to keep the ball in. Off the next point, however, it is Muchova who makes Brady run a little and the American isn’t quite equal to the task to level things off at 15-15.

Some good hitting, with solid depths, gets Brady the next point, and a Muchova drop shot is woefully missed to give her opponent a couple of game-points. An excellent first serve wins Brady the game, a quick enough hold.

Set 3, Game 5

About a third of the court is now in shade and the rest under sunshine and it’s definitely making it difficult for me to spot the ball. Wonder if it’s having any effect on the players.

Not on Muchova by the looks of things, as she races off to a 40-15 lead, and aided by another one of Brady’s errors – that’s her 34th of the match – she closes out the game. Muchova still needs to break her opponent though, down 2-3.

Set 3, Game 4

Suddenly, Brady is finding her range. She is managing to keep her groundstrokes in and off the first opportunity she gets, rushes to the net to close out the point on a volley. A good second serve makes it tough to return for Muchova and she then serves her sixth ace to take a 40-0 lead.

A mistimed return allows Brady to close out an easy winner.

Set 3, Game 3

Somewhat of a better start from Brady and this time it’s Muchova who makes the first unforced error of the game, hitting one wide. A double-fault follows, giving Brady a sniff but Muchova is quick off the blocks and rushes to the net to finish off the next point.

A slower serve next allows Brady a look-in but Muchova hits one too wide of her own to give Brady two break-points and the Czech player gifts the game away with a ridiculously wide forehand.

Whatever happened there!

Set 3, Game 2

Nicely done from Muchova again, drawing her to the net with some variety and while Brady should have got that volley away, a miss gives the Czech the opening point. Couple of points later, Brady manages to get her nose just in front, and then dishes out a strong serve before finishing off the point with a smash. An ace to finish things off and make it 1-1.

Set 3, Game 1

It’s Muchova to start serving in the final set which decides which of these ladies will make it to their maiden Grand Slam final.

Back to back unforced errors from Brady gives Muchova a 30-0 lead before the Czech rushes to the net to complete a volley and get herself her third quick point. And then again, Brady misses her forehand, hits it long to give Muchova the game.

Set 2, Game 9

Brady serves to stay in the set, and finally wins a point at the net. And then smashes a winner, a rare one, to get 30-0 up. Muchova isn’t going to allow Brady to win away with the game though as she hits a backhand winner on return but the American gets a kicking second serve in to take a 40-15 lead.

And then Muchova probably plays one of the points of the match, defending four shots before getting a small window of opportunity to hit a backhand winner. Brady follows it up with an unforced error to make it deuce, and an excellent forehand return gives Muchova a set-point.

What does Brady do? Serves out a double-fault, much like what Muchova had done in the first set! We are going into a third.

Set 2, Game 8

Muchova is now approaching the business-end of the set, needs a couple of good service games to level things out. Can she start things off well in this game?

An average second serve should have allowed Brady a good chance to take advantage of the first point, instead she sends it long and wide. And then again, pushed wide, Brady refuses to buckle down and bat on defensively – instead goes for the aggressive option to hit it long.

The next point is all Muchova’s. She serves well and rushes to the net, in turn gets a good, solid return, which she manages to get to before finishing off with a strong volley. Very soon she closes out the game on love.

Set 2, Game 7

Brady starts off with two strong serves, both of which are hit long and wide by Muchova, and while she misses her first serve off the next, Brady still manages to draw out an easy error on return from her opponent to get herself three game-points.

An over-aggressive groundstroke, one of the many she has hit in this match gets Muchova a point but Brady seals off the game next point.

Set 2, Game 6

Although Brady has really struggled to get going with her winners in, she is still a heavy favourite to win this (check the latest odds here with BetUS). That said, Muchova runs away to an early 30-0 lead before a solid return from Brady gives her a chance to make it 30-15.

A nice, looping second serve from Muchova makes it difficult for Brady and she finishes it off by making the American hit long. Another poor return of serve from Brady gives Muchova the game, taking a 4-2 lead.

Set 2, Game 5

The TV commentators have reliably informed us Brady has just hit only her second forehand winner of the match. Wow. Couple of solid serves later, she herself moves to a 40-0 lead in the game before banging in a fast second serve to win the game. Still a break down though.

Set 2, Game 4

The unforced errors continue to rain down the Brady parade and that causes Muchova to take a 30-0 lead. And a good couple of serves follow soon after to give Muchova the game in a matter of a minute or so, one of the quickest games of the match.

Set 2, Game 3

A confident second serve gets Brady going and she then rushes to the net to deliver two smashes to finish off the next point and take a 30-0 lead. An ace gives her two game-points but that over-aggression which has been her bane all match allows Muchova to pull one back.

Doesn’t matter too much as Brady holds off the next serve and gets on the board for the set.

Set 2, Game 2

Muchova starts off well on her serve, dominating the rallies and takes a 30-0 lead in the game. A poor point from Brady gets Muchova a chance to quickly hold serve and a very good defensive display from Muchova draws a Brady error that gives the Czech the game.

Holds well immediately after the break, Brady.

Set 2, Game 1

Subtle shifts all around in that opening set. What can Muchova do in the second? Starts off by drawing an error off the Brady racquet off successive points, and then hits a winner on return to get herself three break-points.

Brady saves the first one with an ace, but another brilliant return from Muchova gets her a break early in the second set. This was a quick game too.

Set 1, Game 10

Brady has hit just one more winner than Muchova, while being 11 unforced errors ahead of her opponent. And yet, Muchova will now be serving at 4-5 to stay in the set.

A good serve, an entertaining rally and Muchova tries to slice a drop-shot to surprise her opponent only for Brady to get there and hit a near-winner. Muchova is unable to get it over the net. Another good serve follows, and this time Brady is unable to get it off the sweet spot on her racquet.

A rare unforced error from Muchova gives Brady bit of a look-in at 15-30 but a solid forehand winner gets them level. An aggressive return from Brady forces an error off the Muchova racquet to give the American a set-point, and surprise surprise, Brady takes the opening set off a Muchova double-fault!

Set 1, Game 9

A deft drop shot from Muchova brings Brady to the net before the Czech smacks a passing winner and a point later, Brady falls 0-30 down. A strong serve later Brady pulls one point back and manages to control the next rally to make it 30-30.

Brady’s issues with her first serve have become slightly more pronounced more recently, but Muchova fails to take advantage of that as she slams one into the net before a solid serve wins Brady the game. She would be heaving a sigh of relief there.

Set 1, Game 8

Brady had pulled back on the trigger last game and it would be interesting to see how she does for this one and beyond. Brady gets off to a flying start including one solid serve to help her take a 30-0 lead, then smacks a forehand winner down the line to give herself three games points. And a Brady forehand error helps her hold to love.

A quick game for Muchova there.

Set 1, Game 7

Brady’s impatience could her cost her here. She begins the game like she had ended the previous one, with an error – this time off her back-hand – and that is her 14th unforced error of the set. Only four from Muchova!

A couple of points later, Brady adds a 15th error to allow Muchova an opening at 15-30, but the American sets up the next point well to hit a winner and get to 30-30. Off the crucial next rally, Brady shows slightly more patience to keep the ball in and this time it’s Muchova who blinks first, hits a forehand into the net to get herself a game-point.

And much like that previous point, a much calmer Brady gets herself into the rally and lets Muchova make the error. Game, Brady

Set 1, Game 6

Muchova was looking to rush to the net off the very first point but a net cord stalls her momentum, and makes her hit it right into the net. Couple of forehand errors from Brady, who is trying to hit them too hard at the moment, brings Muchova right back into the game and then gives her two game-points with another Brady error off the forehand.

The Czech finishes off the hold by setting it up for a forehand smash.

Set 1, Game 5

Brady starts off the game well, but again, those unnecessary errors to finish off the points is causing Brady issues. Two back to back errors gets Muchova bit of a look-in at 15-30 but Brady pulls one back with a strong serve to level it. Back to back booming serves gets her the errors she needs from the Czech to close out the game and finally win a game.

Still on serve though.

Set 1, Game 4

Some unforced errors coming off the Brady racquet now and Muchova follows it up by running her opponent all over the court to take a 30-0 lead. Another short rally follows, another unforced error from Brady and you can repeat that again to give you an idea of how Muchova finishes off the game to level things up at 2-2.

This has been a strange start alright.

Set 1, Game 3

A rare error from Brady gets her Czech opponent the lead in the game but some more powerful hitting from the American levels things off at 15-15. A solid looping serve gets Brady hitting long and something similar follows to give Brady two game-points.

Muchova saves both of them thanks to Brady shanking a couple of unforced errors, before a third such error gives Muchova a chance to break back. And Muchova gets the break after all, whoa, that is stunning after she was 40-15 down on her opponent’s serve, winning four points in a row to get on the board.

Set 1, Game 2

Some powerful hitting from Brady already as she takes control of the first rally on Muchova’s serve and then drills home a winner. She then shanks the next return to net to win Muchova her first point of the match.

Muchova rushes to the next off the next point but Brady manages to get her backhand wide enough to cause her opponent to hit it to the net. A rather slowish return from Muchova allows Brady to then run around the ball and smash a winner and a forehand error follows up soon enough to give Brady an early break.

Set 1, Game 1

Brady kick-starts proceedings with an ace before a strong serve brings out a Muchova error on return on the next two serves as well. She is 40-0 up in a jiffy and then closes out the game like how she had begun – with an ace!

Brady v Muchova Preview

One on the one side is a player who made it to her maiden Grand Slam semifinal last season, Jennifer Brady. On the other is one who has never played a Grand Slam last-four encounter before this year, both gunning for their maiden major final.

Awaiting them is Naomi Osaka who has only just walloped past Serena Williams in the first semi-final.

Brady is coming off a victory against her friend, and fellow American Jessica Pegula, who was a set up in their quarterfinal. Earlier, she hadn’t had any problems getting past any of her first four opponents, dropping a mere 17 games across those eight sets.

Muchova hadn’t dropped any set till her quarterfinal against Ash Barty either, having sent Karolina Pliskova and Elise Mertens packing.

So, who will it be, would the 24th-ranked Brady continue her brilliant run in Grand Slam or will the world number 27 Muchova have the last laugh after having registered a comeback win over the world number one Barty.
