Yulia Putintseva v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

The only previous meeting between these two players came on the ITF circuit when Siegemund defeated Putintseva in the final of the 2014 Pelham competition. She won that clay court tournament final in straight sets.

Putintseva Steady But Needs a Deeper Run

It’s been a steady start to the season for Putintseva in 2021 but she would have loved to do better than she has. Having touched a career-high ranking of 27th in the world, Putintseva’s third round appearance at the Australian Open has been her best showing this year

That loss to Elina Svitolina followed a third round showing in January in Abu Dhabi and then a second round defeat in the Melbourne tuneup competition.

The one way of looking at these results is her defeats came to much more sterling opponents – going down to Sofia Kenin, Victoria Azarenka and Elina Svitolina in those three losses. Then again, for a player aspiring to break into the top 20 and then beyond, she would have hoped to overcome at least one of those opponents, especially because neither of those three have shown the kind of form their respective rankings deserve.

The seventh seed has the kind of draw where she should make it as far as the semifinals if she can push a little beyond her rankings, starting out with this opener against a former world number 27.

Siegemund Stung by Serena

She was never a favourite going into her opening round match at the Australian Open, not too many can boast of having upset a 23-time Grand Slam but the manner in which Serena Williams played, any chance that Siegemund had of making a match out of it evaporated very quickly.

Siegemund lost 6-1, 6-1 in that opening round encounter, having earlier fought past a couple of opponents at the Gippsland Trophy to make it to the third round.

Unfortunately for Siegemund, her form has been found wanting even before that and the inconsistencies have come to the fore at different times. This includes a shock opening round defeat at the Abu Dhabi Open to Kirsten Flipkens, a match in which she was 1/2 odds favourite to win it.

She will have it rather difficult in her opener here.

Putintseva v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Putintseva is a heavy favourite to win this. While she hasn’t gone deep in all the three tournaments she has played so far, she has also managed to get past most of her opponents ranked lower than her with ease.

Tip: Putintseva to win: 1/2 (bet365)
