Federico Delbonis v Pedro Sousa Head to Head
There have been three previous matches between these two players but all of them came in the 2009-2013 period and on the Challenger circuit. Delbonis won all those three (which were also played on clay).

Delbonis Withdraws from Australian Open
Despite travelling to country for the Australian Open, Delbonis had to withdraw from the competition after participating in the tune-up competition in the leadup to the season’s first major.
The only match that Delbonis played was a part of the Great Ocean Road Open in which he lost in the first round to Matt Ebden, before opting out of the Australian Open.
This follows a mediocre year for the former world number 33 – he has now fallen to 80th in the world – in which he carved out a few results on clay but fell woefully short on other surfaces.
A quarterfinal apiece at the Kitzbuhel Open and the Sardinia Open while a semifinal in the Parma Challenger ensured his rankings didn’t wildly swing away into wilderness but with no other deep runs to show in the season, he remained stuck down the ladder. A solid performances during the clay court swing will go a long way in helping him climb up the rankings but Delbonis will need to summon up some of his better form from the previous season to be able to do.

Sousa, a Solid Challenger Performer But…
…but he has often struggled at the highest level. And that is also why Sousa has never gotten better than the 99th rank that has been his best ever ranking on the ATP charts.
Currently 107th in the world, the Portuguese player ended the 2020 season with a Challenger title win – the only one of the year – but his best performance had come in Buenos Aires at the start of the season. There, as a lucky loser, Sousa came through and made it to the final for the very first – and only – time so far in his career.
Sousa began this season with a second round appearance at the Murray River Open where he lost to Dan Evans but then fell away in the opening round of the Australian Open to Stan Wawrinka.
Clay is an obviously preferred surface for Sousa and he does have some semblance of form behind his back – or at least confidence – from late last season to give his opponent a run for his money.
Delbonis v Sousa Prediction and Tip
Delbonis is an obvious favourite at 4/7 but the match can be expected to be a lot closer than what those odds suggest, and we expect this to be a three-setter.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
