Soon-woo Kwon v Thai-Son Kwiatkowski Head to Head
These two had faced off in their only previous encounter at the 2020 US Open. That first round encounter went to four sets and Kwon came back from a set down to defeat the American.

Kwon Coming off Challenger Title
After making an ordinary start to the season on the ATP tour, Kwon turned his attention to the Biella Challenger played in the lead-up to this tournament in Singapore. And he went all the way to win the title there, dropping only one set on the way.
Earlier in the season, opening round losses at the Delray Beach Open and the Australian Open and just one first round win at the Great Ocean Road Open have meant the South Korean has taken a tumble in his rankings.
Kwon’s career-best has been 69th in the world, nearly 30 places in front of his current ranking and has won three titles on the Challenger circuit. However, at the highest level, Kwon is yet to get going having won just one main draw match in all of the Grand Slam and Masters tennis he has played in his young career.
With the momentum in his favour, Kwon would be hoping for a deep run in this competition, starting out with this match against a player ranked outside the top 200.

Kwiatkowski Needs to Get Back to His Best
Kwiatkowski shot to fame last year when he won his maiden Challenger title in Newport Beach, in what was his first final at that level. Unfortunately for him, like was the case for most, Kwiatkowski didn’t do anything of note after that, with the pandemic and poor form hitting him quite badly.
Playing in just seven tournaments after that title, Kwiatkowski won only one match at the Challenger level and two matches on the Futures circuit, losing seven matches in the process.
This year has not been too much better so far. The American world number 217 failed to get past the first hurdle in the qualifiers of the Australian Open, lost in the first round at one of the Biella Challengers and then failed to qualify for the next one before finally clinching the main draw spot here in Singapore.
Can he now get a surprise main draw win here?
Kwon v Kwiatkowski Prediction and Tip
Kwon is an obvious favourite here and given the level of tennis both have played in recent times, it seems like the Korean should come through this.
Tip: Kwon to win: 2/5 (bet365)
