Albot with an Australian Open Best
Ranked 85th in the world, Albot started the season with back to back opening round losses at the Antalya Open and then at the Melbourne tune-up competition, the Murray River Open. He didn’t win a set in either of those two matches to Jeremy Chardy and Federico Coria.
Which is why when he went into the Australian Open, not too much was expected from Albot, except for making up the numbers. He went one better. Or to be more accurate, two better.
In the first round of the Australian Open, Albot was a whopping 10/1 to shock Roberto Bautista-Agut and after losing the first set, those odds lengthened considerably. Albot wasn’t deterred and took full toll of Bautista-Agut’s waywardness to shock the Spaniard in four sets and march into the second.
And there, the Moldovan registered a three-set win over Chris O’Connell, to make it to a career-best showing at the Australian Open.
This new-found confidence should give him a good chance of carrying forward that momentum in this competition the following week.

Smith Hasn’t Won Main Draw Match in Years
After missing out on qualifying for the Australian Open and losing in the first round at the Great Ocean Road Open just prior to the Australian Open, Smith finally made it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw here.
What’s been eluding this Challengers specialist for years now is a main draw level victory on the ATP tour, having last won a match in 2016! Yes, it’s been that long.
Unfortunately for the once-108th-ranked Aussie, things haven’t gone too well and he has often found himself grappling for main draw spots in qualifiers as a result. Here, he overcame Roy Hobbs and Malek Jaziri to make it to round one but the big question is if he can propel himself forward from there on.
Sounds like a tough task and at 7/2 odds, even the bookmakers seem to think so.
Albot v Smith Prediction and Tip
Albot couldn’t have hoped for an easier opening round encounter and we reckon he should get through this one in straight sets.
Tip: Albot to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
