Ash Barty v Danielle Collins Head to Head

There were three matches played between these two players before this with Barty winning every single time. The first two came on clay, while their latest meeting in this very tournament last season was on a hard court surface.

Barty Looking to Move from Stinging Defeat

The Aussie number one was on a roll heading into the quarterfinal of the Australian Open, having won eight matches in a row without dropping a set. She then went a set and 2-0 up in the second set in her quarterfinal against Karolina Muchova, with the Czech struggling to cope with the heat, forced to take a medical timeout.

Unfortunately for Barty, that signalled a turnaround of gargantuan proportions as Muchova suddenly returned fit and charged up and came through to win it in three. A chance to add to her one Grand Slam win had gone out of the window.

Classy as ever, Barty refused to blame the timeout for her loss and opted to talk about her own performances instead. She had, after all, won the Yarra Valley Classic coming into the Australian Open and was one of the top two favourites to go right the distance.

What Barty would like here to quickly forget her Australian Open memory is to add to her collection of nine WTA titles. It would be a small consolation but one that should hold her in a good stead going into the rest of the season.

Collins Continues with Consistency

Ranked 37th in the world, the American Collins would have loved to go beyond her second round appearance at the Australian Open but she came up against Karolina Pliskova. Now it’s not like Pliskova’s been in top form, but the gulf in quality between the two was apparent and Collins fell away in straight sets.

The loss, however, was sandwiched by two top performances from Collins. The one-time WTA title winner made it to the quarterfinal of the Yarra Valley Classic Open where she had beaten Pliskova but lost to Serena Williams in three sets, and then followed up her exit from the Australian Open with a semifinal at the Phillip Island Trophy.

Eventually, she lost to Daria Kasatkina in the semifinal there.

And now while she has won her opener with some ease against Shuai Zheng, she faces a mountainous task of overturning the world number one Barty in round two of this Adelaide competition.

Barty v Collins Prediction and Tip

Barty is an overwhelming 1/4 to win this against the American but expect Collins to give some sort of a fight here. Over 19.5 games in this one.

Tip: Barty to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
