David Goffin v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Goffin has never played against Sonego at any competitive level before this.

Goffin Hoping a Repeat of 2020 Montpellier

A semifinalist at the 2020 Montpellier Open, Goffin is now a win away from defending all those points, having won his second round match against Benjamin Bonzi. After getting getting an opening round bye, Goffin looked slightly rusty but came through in three sets to set up this quarterfinal meeting.

In a match lasting north of two and a half hours, Goffin was up a break early in the first set and led 3-1 only to be broken two times after that to lose the opening set. It was one of the three breaks of serves he endured in the set.

Goffin, who had earlier crashed out of the opening rounds at both, the Great Ocean Road Open and the Australian Open, broke his 125th-ranked opponent early in the second set, racing off to a 4-0 lead. And while Bonzi did get one back, his Belgian opponent finished off the set in a hurry.

The third was keenly fought, with Goffin and Bonzi exchanging breaks of serve to get to level terms at 4-4. Goffin’s experience, however, stood out as he converted the next break-point he got and completed a 7-5 win in the final set.

While it did take him time, Goffin would be relieved to have made it through after his struggles in recent times.

Sonego Sends Sebastian Packing

Sebastian Korda is a young name that would be heard often in the future but Lorenzo Soengo was having none of that in their second round encounter in Montpellier. The Italian 25-year-old crushed his American opponent’s hopes of a strong run in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-2 to make it to the quartefinals.

Sonego, who had earlier overcome Hugo Gaston in three sets in the first round of the competition, spent just an hour and 15 minutes on court to clinch the encounter. In doing so, Sonego was off to a flier, with one break of serve in the first set and two in the second before serving it out.

In turn, Sonego faced just two break-points in the entire match and saved both of them.

The stakes get raised now, both in terms of what’s in store and the quality of opponent but the Italian world number 36 will give himself a healthy chance here.

Goffin v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Goffin starts a favourite but only just about at 4/5 with Sonego at 1/1. Given the form shown by the two players, we believe this could be anybody’s match which goes into a third set.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
